JJ Gabriel's Manchester United Exit Talks in Barcelona
JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United career looks to be slipping away before it has even begun, with the teenage forward now in Barcelona for talks over a move to the Spanish champions.
The 15-year-old, regarded as one of the brightest prospects in United’s academy, has already formally told the club he wants out. Multiple sources have confirmed he has submitted a request for his registration to be cancelled with immediate effect, a move that would make him a free agent just as he turns 16 next month.
United, though, are digging in.
Contract standoff with United
TEAMtalk revealed back on August 13 that United were worried about their chances of keeping Gabriel, with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all circling. By mid-September, the situation had escalated: Gabriel informed the club of his desire to leave and followed that up with the formal notice asking for his academy registration to be terminated.
His current registration runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, giving United a strong contractual position. The club retain the right to challenge his request, and, according to ESPN, have no intention of cancelling the agreement.
Behind the scenes, United have been preparing a charm offensive. Fabrizio Romano reported that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been personally involved in efforts to convince Gabriel to stay, with talks planned to try and change the youngster’s mind.
So far, those efforts are not working.
Barcelona move gathers pace
On Friday, transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported that both Real Madrid and Barcelona had held positive talks with Gabriel ahead of his 16th birthday on October 6. That date is crucial: once he turns 16, he can explore a move to an EU club such as Madrid or Barça, helped by the fact he holds an Irish passport.
Bailey highlighted that this European route is far more straightforward than any solution within England, where the long-running academy registration complicates matters.
Now the interest has gone beyond calls and scouting reports. It has moved to the negotiating table.
Manchester Evening News chief Manchester United correspondent Tyrone Marshall revealed on X that Gabriel is in Barcelona on Wednesday for talks over a transfer to the Nou Camp. Marshall reported that United will reject his request to be de-registered, but warned that the threat of a move after October 6 – which would require FIFA approval – still looms large.
Marshall later added that Gabriel is “closer to Manchester United exit” despite the club’s stance, confirming the teenager is in Spain and in discussions with Barcelona. Reports there suggest he is expected to secure the EU passport he needs as early as next week, a development that would only smooth the path.
Spanish outlet Marca has also reported Gabriel’s presence in Barcelona, while journalist Ben Jacobs backed up those claims, stating that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are seen as the leading contenders should Gabriel complete a move abroad.
For United, this is no longer a distant threat. Their teenage prodigy is in Catalonia, talking to the champions of Spain, and the clock is ticking towards October 6.
