JJ Gabriel Saga Intensifies: Manchester United Starlet in Barcelona
Manchester United’s stand-off with teenage forward JJ Gabriel has taken another sharp turn, with the 15-year-old now in Barcelona while some of Europe’s biggest clubs circle.
Gabriel has formally informed United that he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a move that has sent shockwaves through the club’s academy setup and alerted elite recruiters across the continent.
Real Madrid have already registered strong interest in the highly rated forward, with Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Barcelona also keen. Gabriel left the UK on Thursday, initially travelling to France, and is now in the Catalan city as the battle for his future gathers pace.
Registration row and European escape route
United currently hold the London-born youngster’s registration. If they decide to keep it, they can block any move to another English club until the end of the season, effectively closing off a domestic exit in the short term.
Europe is a different story.
Gabriel could unlock a route out of England by securing a European Union passport. He is eligible through his father, a former Republic of Ireland international, or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage. If he obtains EU citizenship, he would be able to join a club in the EU when he turns 16 on 6 October.
That date now looms large. So does the question of where he will be playing his football once it arrives.
Fallout from Youth League snub
Tensions have been building behind the scenes.
Gabriel has not trained with United since 10 September, the night he announced himself in the Uefa Youth League with a hat-trick on his debut. Yet despite that explosive start, he was not registered for United’s Champions League opener against Sabah FK, a game Michael Carrick’s side won 4-0.
That decision went down badly in the player’s camp. Sources close to Gabriel were furious the club chose not to include him in the competition squad, a flashpoint that appears to have deepened the rift.
Under Uefa rules, Gabriel cannot represent another club in this season’s Youth League, even if he moves, tying him to United in that competition on paper but not in practice.
He has also made an impact in domestic action, scoring in each of his first two Premier League 2 appearances this season. Even so, he will not feature for United’s second string against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday, underlining just how far the situation has deteriorated.
Carrick treads carefully
Faced with growing speculation and mounting external noise, Carrick chose his words carefully when asked about Gabriel again at his Friday news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Fulham.
"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," he said.
"With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.
"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."
The message was clear: United’s manager wants to dial down the frenzy around a teenager suddenly thrust into the spotlight.
Whether that will be possible now is another matter. Gabriel is in Barcelona, Europe’s giants are lining up, and a 16th birthday that could reshape his career – and test United’s grip on one of their brightest prospects – is just weeks away.
