JJ Gabriel Moves Closer to Barcelona as Manchester United Faces Talent Loss

JJ Gabriel is in Barcelona with his representatives as talks intensify over a move that would see one of Manchester United’s brightest academy prospects walk away from Old Trafford at just 15.

The teenager has become the centre of a tug of war across Europe. Premier League clubs are tracking him. So are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. All this after Gabriel and his camp formally requested to leave United.

United still hope to change his mind. He is under contract until the end of the season and senior figures at the club have been trying to keep him in Manchester. But with every day that passes, the mood around Carrington suggests the same thing: Gabriel looks closer to the exit than the training pitch.

The turning point came last Thursday. United thrashed Sabah 5-0 in the UEFA Youth League. Gabriel stole the night with a hat-trick. Then, almost as soon as the final whistle faded, his camp moved. A formal request was lodged for him to be de-registered.

Since that game, he has not trained with United.

Another twist arrived on Friday. England’s latest youth squads were announced. Gabriel’s name was nowhere, despite him having most recently represented his country at U17 level. Behind all of this sits a regulatory loophole that could open the door to Europe. There is a belief, based on FIFA precedent, that Gabriel could leave United for a club on the continent once he turns 16 on October 6, provided he secures a European passport through either of his parents. United head coach Michael Carrick, asked about the situation on Friday, chose his words carefully and made it clear the club are treading lightly around a teenager suddenly under intense scrutiny.

“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” Carrick said.

“I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”

While Carrick focused on Gabriel’s welfare, the football world focused on the potential loss. For Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, United stand on the brink of a major setback.

“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said. “The problem now is with the lad and probably his agents and his family - I don't know him so I'm only thinking from the outside.

“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”

The comparison stings for United. Dowman and Ngumoha are already tasting senior environments at rival giants. Gabriel, watching his peers, is at the age where patience is thin and ambition burns hot.

“This is the problem you're going to have with the kids of this day and age,” Merson added. “They're so talented that they want to play straight away. When I was playing, it was unheard of at 16.

“It'll be a massive blow for Man Utd. Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent. They'll have every club in the world wanting him.”

Barcelona are now at the front of that queue, talking directly to his camp in Catalonia while United cling to faint hope. A 15-year-old forward, a looming 16th birthday, a FIFA loophole and Europe’s elite circling: the countdown to October 6 suddenly feels like a defining clock for United’s academy and for Gabriel’s next step.
