Jim McGuinness Continues as Donegal Football Manager for 2027

Jim McGuinness will stay on as Donegal senior football manager for the 2027 season, extending one of the most influential reigns in modern county history into a fourth year of his second coming.

Donegal GAA confirmed the decision on Monday evening, announcing that McGuinness has been ratified for a further one-year term, while Mickey McCann has been handed another two years in charge of the county’s senior hurlers. McCann has held that role since 2018.

“Following a meeting of the County Committee, Donegal confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as Senior Hurling Manager for a two year term and Jim McGuinness as Senior Football manager for a one year term,” the statement read.

McGuinness’s return has already reshaped Donegal’s trajectory. Back in the hot seat for a second spell, he has delivered back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and steered the county to an All-Ireland final appearance in 2025, rekindling memories of his breakthrough era.

This year brought more silverware. In March, Donegal claimed the Football League Division One title with a final victory over Kerry, underlining their ability to mix it with the elite when the stakes rise.

Championship, though, told a harsher story.

Donegal crashed out of the Ulster SFC at the quarter-final stage against Down, a defeat that cut deep given the standards McGuinness has set. Later in the summer, they were edged out by Dublin after extra-time in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series, a draining exit that left the season feeling unfulfilled despite the league triumph.

McGuinness, now 53, originally returned on a three-year deal with an option of a fourth. That option has now been activated, and the man who led Donegal to All-Ireland glory in 2012 will have at least one more shot to turn promise and near-misses back into the ultimate prize.
