Inter Milan Targets Federico Chiesa After Curtis Jones Deal
Inter Milan have already raided Liverpool once this week. They might not be finished.
On Friday, the Italian champions wrapped up a deal for Curtis Jones, with the 25-year-old midfielder swapping Anfield for San Siro in a move that could rise to £30 million. It’s a sizeable outlay, but the Nerazzurri are already plotting a second move on the Premier League giants.
This time, the target is Federico Chiesa.
From title winner to fringe figure
Chiesa arrived at Liverpool in 2024 from Juventus for a fee of around £12.5m, a calculated gamble on a player whose ceiling was never in doubt but whose fitness record always hovered over any deal.
On paper, it looked shrewd. A Euro 2020 winner, still in his prime, on the books of a club chasing every major trophy. In reality, his Liverpool stint has drifted.
The 28-year-old collects a reported £150,000 per week, but his role has rarely matched his pay packet. He can claim a Premier League winner’s medal, yet his contribution has largely come from the fringes. Cameos, not centre stage.
Chiesa struggled to impose himself last season under Arne Slot, starting only two league games and failing to convince in either. Now, under Andoni Iraola in preseason, the winger has again fallen short of expectations. The new manager has not been persuaded, and Liverpool are open to a sale if their valuation is met.
Inter’s replacement plan
The door to Italy could swing open thanks to another transfer domino.
Inter are preparing to offload Brazilian winger Luis Henrique to Roma in a deal worth around €25m. That move would leave Cristian Chivu in need of a wide attacking option, and Chiesa has emerged as a leading candidate to fill the vacancy.
Inter-focused journalist Fabio Bergomi has gone as far as naming Chiesa as the most likely replacement.
“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” Bergomi told his YouTube audience, before adding: “So I would narrow it down to Chiesa, because perhaps in the end they close Chiesa and he is plausible.”
The logic is clear. Inter want a proven attacker, Liverpool have a high-earning fringe player, and Chiesa knows Serie A inside out.
Injury clouds and an uncertain future
Chiesa’s current situation at Liverpool only sharpens the sense of an impending exit.
He has been missing from training in the buildup to the 20-time English champions’ season opener against Newcastle. That absence might easily be read as a transfer signal, but the explanation is more straightforward: he is dealing with yet another injury issue, unrelated to any negotiations.
Even so, the pattern is hard to ignore. Limited starts, recurring fitness problems, a manager not fully sold, and a club willing to listen to offers.
Inter have already prised one player out of Anfield this week. The question now is whether they return to complete a high-profile double, bringing Chiesa back to Italy and handing him a fresh start at San Siro.
