Freiburg Striker Igor Matanovic Responds to Manchester United and Tottenham Transfer Rumors

Igor Matanovic, the Freiburg striker, has finally spoken out about the swirling rumors linking him with moves to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. After a hot start in the Bundesliga this season, the 23-year-old insists his focus remains fully on his current club under coach Julian Schuster.

Interest from Premier League Clubs

Both Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Matanovic to strengthen their attacking options. Manchester United especially need a forward since Joshua Zirkzee is linked with a Fiorentina move. Despite this, Matanovic has dismissed all talk of leaving.

The striker, who stands at 6ft 5in, has scored four goals in as many Bundesliga matches, including a recent goal against Werder Bremen. Right after that game, he was quick to put an end to speculation about a move to England.

No Talks With Other Clubs

When asked about potential contact with Manchester United, Matanovic stated plainly, "As far as I'm concerned, I’m currently at Freiburg. There has been absolutely no contact with anyone from my side." This came amid increasing transfer rumors ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

Matanovic credits his recent success to mental clarity as much as physical training. He said, "People think success comes from hard training, which is true, but football is more a mental game. When you're clear-headed, not overthinking or hesitating, things just happen. If I start overthinking or lose confidence, it doesn't work."

Breakout Season in Germany

Since moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to Freiburg last summer, Matanovic’s career has taken off. He netted 15 goals across all competitions last season and helped Freiburg reach the Europa League final, where they lost to Aston Villa.

Asked if joining Freiburg was the right move, he responded confidently, "Yes, of course. It was a huge step. Thanks to Freiburg, I also made it to the World Cup, which was a great success for me as a young player." Although he didn’t score during his appearances for Croatia against England, Ghana, and Portugal at the tournament, the experience boosted his form this season.

Contract and Future Prospects

Matanovic is contracted with Freiburg until June 2029. This means the club holds all the cards unless a significant offer arrives before the transfer window closes Tuesday. Both Manchester United and Tottenham would have to make a serious effort to secure his signature.

For now, Matanovic will keep leading Freiburg's attack, aiming to maintain his scoring streak and help the team build on their strong start to the Bundesliga season.
