Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle had identified the Danish midfielder as his preferred replacement for Bruno Guimarães, with sporting director Ross Wilson driving talks over a £15 million deal. Marseille were ready to sell. The numbers were in place, the pathway clear.
Only one problem: Højbjerg did not want to go.
His reluctance to join the Premier League side has angered club owner Frank McCourt, and the response from above has been swift. The armband is gone, the message unmistakable.

Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio made no attempt to hide his frustration with the call, making it clear the decision came from upstairs rather than the dugout.
“It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management,” he told the media after the game. “If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with.
“But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it.”
It is a rare public glimpse of a head coach openly distancing himself from a disciplinary or symbolic move of this magnitude. The power lines at Marseille have been drawn in thick ink: the board wanted to sell, the player refused, and the coach has been ordered to live with the fallout.
How that dynamic plays out in the coming weeks – with Højbjerg still starting but stripped of formal authority – will shape the atmosphere around a club already prone to volatility.
Newcastle turn to Palhinha – but face another rejection
For Newcastle, the saga has hit a dead end. Signing a player who does not want the move is off the table, and the club have already begun to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.
Attention has turned to Joao Palhinha. The Magpies have put a three-year contract on the table for the Bayern Munich midfielder as they search for Guimarães’ successor.
Again, though, resistance.
Palhinha’s preference is to join Aston Villa instead, leaving Newcastle staring at the prospect of missing out on a second midfield target who is unconvinced by the project at St James’ Park.
