Harry Kane Eyes Ballon d'Or After Second Golden Shoe
Harry Kane stood in Munich with a second European Golden Shoe in his hands and his eyes fixed firmly on an even bigger prize: the Ballon d'Or.
The Bayern Munich striker, fresh from what he called his "best season ever", made no attempt to hide his ambition after being honoured again as Europe's most prolific marksman.
A season of staggering numbers
Kane claimed the 2023-24 Golden Shoe after a devastating first full campaign in Germany.
- Thirty-six goals in 31 Bundesliga games.
- A league and cup double with Bayern.
Only two players in the history of the German top flight have scored more in a single season.
His form did not stop at club level. Kane struck six times at the World Cup, taking his tally to 14 and making him England's all-time leading scorer at the tournament. Across all competitions for club and country, he finished the season with 73 goals.
No wonder this award felt different.
This Golden Shoe, he admitted, "tasted even better than the first".
Ballon d'Or in his sights
The numbers have inevitably pushed Kane into the heart of the Ballon d'Or debate.
He knows it. Everyone around him knows it.
"Obviously, that's out of my control," he said, aware that the vote will rage from now until the ceremony in October. "I know, of course, there's going to be a lot of talk about it from now until October when it's announced.
"Ultimately, I've done everything I can last season. It was my best season by far. I achieved a lot with the teams I was in."
He is right about that. Bayern reached the Champions League semi-finals, losing narrowly to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. With England, Kane went deep again on the biggest stage, only to fall in an agonising 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The individual recognition now puts him in elite company.
Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have more European Golden Shoes.
Messi has six, all from his Barcelona days. Ronaldo collected four, three at Real Madrid and one with Manchester United. Kane now sits just behind that duo, the only active challenger with a realistic chance of closing the gap.
Asked directly about this year's Ballon d'Or race, Kane pushed the verdict away from himself.
"That's for you guys to debate and fans to debate," he said. "That's what makes the Ballon d'Or so special as well. Many players have had great seasons."
Bayern future on the table
While the argument over individual awards will roll on until late October in London, another storyline is already building in Munich.
Kane confirmed on Monday that he is about to begin talks over a contract extension at Bayern. His current deal runs until 2027, but the club are keen to lock down the man who has instantly become the face of their attack.
A second Golden Shoe, a record-breaking season, semi-finals on two fronts and now a push for the Ballon d'Or.
Kane has planted himself firmly among the game’s giants. The next question is simple: how much higher can he climb from here?
