Chelsea’s Squad Numbers for 2026-27 Season: Xabi Alonso's Blueprint

Chelsea’s squad numbers for the 2026-27 season have done more than fill a page on the club website – they’ve sketched out Xabi Alonso’s first blueprint at Stamford Bridge.

Joao Pedro takes the No9 – and the mantle

The headline change is clear. Joao Pedro has been handed the No9 shirt, taking over from Liam Delap, who drops back to No12.

It’s a symbolic call as much as a practical one. The Brazilian arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion for £60 million last summer and responded with 15 goals in 35 Premier League games. Now the number on his back confirms what his form already suggested: he is Alonso’s main centre-forward for this campaign.

Delap’s switch to No12 underlines the new hierarchy in attack. The shirt that traditionally carries the weight of Chelsea’s goals now belongs firmly to Joao Pedro.

Jackson returns, futures in the balance

Nicolas Jackson is back in west London after his loan spell at Bayern Munich. His situation, though, is far from settled. Doubts still surround his long-term future at the club, but for now he keeps hold of his No15 shirt.

The message is mixed: part of the group, but not necessarily part of the plan.

New faces, new numbers, clear signals

Alonso’s summer arrivals have been slotted in with purpose.

Valentin Barco, signed from sister club Strasbourg, has taken the No4 shirt, previously worn by Tosin Adarabioyo. Barco stepping into a low, senior number hints at a serious role in Alonso’s set-up.

Tosin, still on the books, has been pushed out to No38. For a player who once carried No4, that drop feels like a clear nudge towards the exit door and another indication that his future likely lies away from west London.

Morgan Rogers and Danny Welbeck have been given No17 and No18 respectively, numbers that place them squarely in the first-team frame. Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, whose moves were pre-agreed and completed this summer, will wear No22 and No23 as they begin their Chelsea careers.

At the back, versatile defender Marco Palestra has claimed the No2 shirt, a traditional starter’s number for a full-back or defensive mainstay. Maxence Lacroix takes No5, which has been vacated by Benoit Badiashile as he closes in on a loan move to Napoli.

A squad board that doubles as a transfer map

Taken together, the numbers tell a story. Joao Pedro elevated. Delap repositioned. Tosin nudged to the margins. Badiashile’s old number already reassigned as he prepares for Italy.

Alonso’s first Chelsea season is still weeks away, but the dressing-room pegs already reveal where he sees his core — and who may be walking out of that room before the window shuts.
