Harry Kane Leads English Charge for 2026 Ballon d'Or
Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named on a star-studded 30-man shortlist that also includes Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
The Bayern Munich striker goes into the race as the bookmakers’ clear favourite. The award will be handed out on 26 October at the London Palladium, the first time the ceremony has left Paris for the English capital.
Kane’s case is brutal in its simplicity: 73 goals in 65 games for club and country. He fired Bayern to another Bundesliga title and captained England to World Cup bronze, numbers and moments that have put him at the front of the queue for a prize no Englishman has claimed since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane v the holders, the stars and the future
Standing between Kane and the golden ball is a stacked field. Reigning holder Ousmane Dembele is back in the mix, joined by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe among the headline rivals for the 33-year-old.
Bellingham and Rice are far from mere supporting acts. Rice is one of several Premier League names on the list, alongside Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba, underlining the league’s grip on the game’s elite.
Lionel Messi’s name appears again, as it has for almost two decades, but this time without Cristiano Ronaldo alongside him. The Portugal great has been left out of the 30-man shortlist, a stark marker of a changing era.
Young guns and rising coaches
Lamine Yamal, already mentioned in the main award conversation, also tops the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist, a sign of just how quickly his stock has risen.
He is joined by Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi, Manchester City’s new signing Ayyoub Bouaddi and recent Aston Villa recruit Johan Manzambi. Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman is nominated on the women’s side of the young talent prize, a nod to the club’s investment in emerging stars.
On the touchline, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery are both contenders for Men’s Coach of the Year. They go up against Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique. Arteta’s Arsenal also feature among the nominees for Men’s Club of the Year, recognition of their rise back towards the top of the European game.
Vozinha joins elite goalkeeping company
There is a surprise but deserved name in the Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year category. Cape Verde’s Vozinha has been shortlisted after his standout World Cup displays, his performances forcing him into a conversation usually dominated by players from the traditional powers.
He will battle with Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez – now at Chelsea – among others for the goalkeeping honour.
A London stage for a 70-year milestone
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and, since 2024, co-organised with UEFA. To mark the milestone, the ceremony has been moved from its long-time Paris home to London.
The choice is deliberate. The event will pay tribute to the award’s inaugural winner, England and Blackpool legend Stanley Matthews.
Seventy years on from Matthews lifting the first Ballon d’Or, London will watch to see whether Harry Kane can finally bring the trophy back to English hands.
