Hansi Flick Confirms Rodri Will Miss LaLiga Opener
Barcelona will have to wait to unveil their marquee midfield signing. Hansi Flick confirmed on Saturday that Rodri will not feature in the Spanish champions’ LaLiga opener away to Elche on Sunday.
The former Manchester City anchor, brought in to command Barça’s midfield, is expected to link up with his new teammates at the start of the week.
"He's very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team," Flick told reporters. "This is the plan. He's a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great."
Barça paid a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros to land the Spain World Cup winner, a clear statement of intent in the heart of the pitch. His competitive debut could come quickly: Flick indicated that Rodri may be ready for the second league fixture, at home to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, if all goes smoothly.
Striker Search Continues After Big-Name Exits
The midfield looks reinforced. The forward line does not. With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone, Barcelona enter the new campaign still hunting for a centre-forward in the transfer market.
Flick kept his cards close to his chest over who will lead the line at the Martinez Valero.
He did, however, shine a light on one surprise contender.
Egyptian teenager Hamza Abdelkarim has forced his way into the conversation with an eye-catching pre-season, scoring four goals in friendlies and impressing the new coach with his penalty-box instincts.
"Hamza is having a really great pre-season," Flick said. "He's a No 9, he's young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you're playing in this position, and he made a great job."
If Flick wants to improvise, he has options. New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate through the middle as false nines, as can Raphinha and Dani Olmo. It hints at a fluid, rotating front line until a specialist striker arrives.
Cancelo Ready to Go
One new face is available immediately. Full-back Joao Cancelo, signed this week, has been cleared to play and is in contention to feature against Elche.
"He's ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion," Flick added.
Rodri will have to wait. Cancelo will not. And with a No 9 still missing, Flick’s first official XI as Barcelona coach already feels like a statement about what this new era will look like.
