Hammarby vs Kalmar: A Crucial Allsvenskan Clash
Hammarby’s push for Europe rolls back into 3Arena on Sunday, with Kalmar arriving as the kind of opponent that can either steady a season or derail it in an instant.
After 12 matchweeks, Bajen sit second on 20 points, occupying the first of the Allsvenskan’s two Conference League qualifying places. The table flatters them and exposes them at the same time. They are only two points clear of fourth-placed Elfsborg, yet nine adrift of leaders Sirius after 11 games played, a gap that makes talk of a first league title since 2001 feel distant at best.
What this team can control is nights like this.
Bajen strong at home but still leaking goals
The 2-1 win over Elfsborg on July 5 was more than just three points. It stopped the bleeding. Hammarby had lost three straight in the league before that, conceding seven and scoring three across that miserable run.
Henrik Rydstrom’s side remain a contradiction. Over their last five league games, they have scored nine and conceded nine, shipping at least two goals in three of those matches. They carry threat. They also carry risk.
At 3Arena, though, they have generally looked like a side that belongs near the top. A 2-1 defeat to AIK on May 24 is the only home loss in the league this season; the other five outings have brought four wins and a draw. The stadium has been a shield, even when the form elsewhere has wobbled.
Rydstrom is likely to lean on that home strength again, but he has a defensive reshuffle to manage. Full-back Hampus Skoglund limped off last time out, opening the door for Ibrahima Fofana to come in from the start. Victor Eriksson and Frederik Winther should continue as the central pairing, with Persson completing the back four in front of Hahn.
In midfield, Markus Karlsson and Tesfaldet Tekie are expected to anchor the centre, while the creative burden again falls on the line of three behind the striker: Madjed, Nahir Besara and Lind.
Up front, Paulos Abraham will be the focal point. He is chasing his seventh league goal of the season, and his productivity may hinge on how often Besara can find pockets of space and thread passes into him. When that connection clicks, Hammarby look like a side capable of blowing teams away. When it doesn’t, the game can quickly turn into a scrap.
Kalmar’s away-day problem
Kalmar arrive in Stockholm sitting 12th on 13 points, but with a result fresh in the mind that might yet define their season. Their 3-0 win over Orgryte on July 5 was ruthless, especially in the first half. They allowed their opponents just five touches inside the box before the interval, strangling the game before Orgryte could even breathe.
Those three points could prove precious. Kalmar are only two points above 14th-placed IFK Goteborg, who currently occupy the relegation playoff spot. Every slip now comes with a cost.
There is form to cling to. Over their last five Allsvenskan games, Toni Koskela’s side have taken nine points, a tally that ranks fourth-best in the division over that span. Three wins and two defeats: streaky, but trending in the right direction.
The problem lies away from home. Kalmar have lost five straight on their travels, conceding 11 goals and scoring only four. The moment they step onto someone else’s pitch, their structure loosens and their edge blunts.
History does not help them either. They are winless in their last six meetings with Hammarby, and defeat on Sunday would be their fourth in a row against Bajen. It is the kind of record that lingers in the back of players’ minds when the first tackle flies in.
Selection puzzles and key battles
Koskela has his own selection issues to navigate. Centre-forward Malcolm Stolt is not expected back until later this month, so the responsibility in attack again falls on Anthony Olusanya and Abdussalam Magashy. Between them, they must offer both penetration in behind and a reliable outlet when Kalmar look to break.
Behind them, Robert Gojani and Carl Gustafsson are set to keep their places in midfield, tasked with disrupting Hammarby’s rhythm and feeding the wide players, Rosenqvist and Sagoe Jr, who will look to drive at the home full-backs.
At the back, Zakarias Ravik and Melker Hallberg should continue as the central defensive partnership, flanked by Jansson and Larsson, with Brolin in goal. That unit has to be far more resolute than in recent away outings if Kalmar are to survive the waves of pressure that usually come at 3Arena.
For Hammarby, the duel between Tekie and the Kalmar midfield two could decide the tone of the game. If Tekie and Karlsson control the tempo, Besara will find time on the ball. If Gojani and Gustafsson can turn it into a more chaotic contest, Kalmar’s chances rise.
Prediction
Hammarby have only just pulled themselves out of a worrying slump, and there is still a fragility about them that makes any talk of a routine home win feel premature. They score enough to scare teams, but they concede enough to keep them interested.
Kalmar, for all their momentum at home, have been a different, less convincing side on the road. That contrast sets up a contest that feels finely balanced rather than one-sided.
Expect goals, swings in momentum and both managers to leave with as many questions as answers.
Prediction: Hammarby 2-2 Kalmar.
