Greg Docherty Leaves Charlton After Successful Promotion Season

Charlton Athletic have parted company with captain Greg Docherty by mutual consent, drawing a sharp line under the midfielder’s brief but influential spell in south London.

Docherty only arrived at The Valley in July 2024, yet quickly became the heartbeat of Nathan Jones’ side, wearing the armband and driving the Addicks to promotion from League One in his first season at the club. He clocked up 90 appearances in Charlton colours and scored five goals, before both parties agreed it was time to move on.

The 29-year-old is now a free agent and can join a new club outside the transfer window.

“To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege,” the Scot told Charlton’s website. “I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the utmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.

“I'll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast and I'm now excited to see what the future holds.”

His final outing came in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, a low-key ending to a year in which he had become a central figure in Charlton’s resurgence.

Docherty’s departure is framed not by fallout, but by ambition. Jones was candid about the decision and the direction of travel.

“He's a leader, an unbelievable pro and he should take his rightful place in the history of Charlton Athletic,” the manager said. “The tough thing is, we want to evolve, we want to improve on every level and it meant that Doc's game time was probably going to be more limited than he wanted. We had open conversations around that and felt this was the best way forward.”

For Docherty, whose CV already includes spells at Hamilton, Rangers, Hull, Shrewsbury and Hibernian, the next chapter now opens unexpectedly early. For Charlton, the task is clear: build on promotion without the captain who helped drag them there.
