Getafe Negotiates Transfer for Liverpool's Bajcetic
Getafe have opened talks with Liverpool over a deal for Stefan Bajcetic, with the Spanish midfielder’s Anfield future back under the microscope in the final stretch of the summer window.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that the LaLiga club are in negotiations to sign the 21-year-old, with the “formula” of the move still being discussed. At this stage, it’s unclear whether Getafe are pushing for a loan or a permanent transfer.
What is clear is how quickly Bajcetic’s situation has flipped.
Just after the 2022 World Cup, the teenager burst into Liverpool’s first team and looked like he had been there for years. He snapped into tackles, pressed with conviction and used the ball with a composure that belied his age. His standout display in a derby win in early 2023 felt like a statement: Liverpool had unearthed another gem for their midfield.
Then the injuries came. And they stayed.
Since the back end of the 2024/25 season, Bajcetic hasn’t kicked a competitive ball. The momentum that once seemed unstoppable simply vanished under a pile of medical updates and rehab sessions.
There was a flicker of hope this summer. The Spaniard returned to full training, rejoined his teammates and boarded the plane for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States. It should have been his platform to remind a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, exactly what he can do.
Instead, he didn’t feature in a single pre-season game.
While Bajcetic watched on, Trey Nyoni seized his chance and surged up the pecking order with a string of eye-catching performances. The contrast was stark: one young midfielder accelerating, another stuck in neutral through no fault of his own.
That shift has left Bajcetic facing an uncomfortable reality. Even with Curtis Jones potentially on the radar of Inter Milan, there is no guarantee the 21-year-old would force his way into Iraola’s immediate plans.
For Liverpool, the equation is not straightforward. Without knowing the structure of Getafe’s proposal – whether they want a temporary deal or to buy him outright, and at what price – it is hard to judge how smart it would be to let him go now. A loan could offer valuable minutes and a return to rhythm. A permanent sale would be a far bigger call on a player who once looked like a long-term pillar of their midfield.
For Bajcetic, the decision feels more personal. After months of “injury hell”, simply being back on the grass with his teammates is a relief. But training-ground sharpness is one thing; regular football is another. If Getafe can put a convincing plan in front of him – real minutes, a defined role, a chance to re-establish himself in LaLiga – the lure of going home will be powerful.
Two weeks remain in the window. Liverpool must decide whether to hold their nerve and keep faith in his recovery, or let him rebuild his career in Spain while they reshape a midfield that is evolving without him.
