The 34-year-old arrives from Marseille for a reported £1.7 million fee, a bargain figure for a goalkeeper with his résumé and a familiar face at that. Rulli briefly belonged to City back in 2016-17, but never pulled on the shirt for a single first-team minute. This time, he returns as a proven winner, not a development project.
He has signed a deal running through to the summer of 2028, a clear sign City see him as a long-term pillar in their goalkeeping group rather than a short-term stopgap.
From unused asset to decorated returnee
Rulli’s first spell in Manchester barely registered beyond the paperwork. Now he comes back as a veteran who has seen and survived just about everything elite football can throw at a goalkeeper.
He has moved through Europe’s major leagues with Real Sociedad, Montpellier, Villarreal, Ajax and most recently Marseille, building a reputation as a sharp shot-stopper with a taste for big occasions. The highlight remains that unforgettable 2021 Europa League final with Villarreal, when he not only scored in the marathon penalty shootout but then saved David de Gea’s kick to break Manchester United hearts and deliver the trophy to the Yellow Submarine.
That kind of nerve under pressure is exactly what City crave in a position where one mistake can define a season.
“You have to go for it”
Rulli made no attempt to hide his enthusiasm at finally getting the chance to actually play for the Premier League champions.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp. When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it,” he said, underlining how quickly his mind was made up once the call came.

“Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City's success over a long time has been impressive. Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards. Every professional wants to be in a high-performance environment and I can't wait to get started because I know I will improve and learn, which is always my main priority.”
The message was clear: this is a goalkeeper who hasn’t come to coast through his mid-thirties. He expects to be pushed. He expects to get better.

Inside the club, the excitement is mutual. Football Director Hugo Viana highlighted Rulli’s professionalism and longevity at the top level as decisive factors in the move.
“The experience he brings is obvious – he has played at the very highest level for many years. I have been really impressed by him during our conversations, a strong desire to join us. It’s clear we are getting a brilliant professional, as well as a top ‘keeper,” Viana said.
He also stressed how Rulli’s arrival reshapes the dynamic of the goalkeeping department.
“Everyone at City is looking forward to welcoming him back to the club. The qualities he will bring are ones we need, and together with Gigio and Marcus [Bettinelli] make a great team. Our goalkeeper coaches are really happy with the group.”
With Trafford gone, City wanted experience, reliability and character. On paper, they have ticked all three boxes.
A serial winner in the dressing room
Rulli doesn’t just bring miles on the clock. He brings medals.
At international level, he has carved out a role as a trusted squad member for Argentina, collecting eight caps and a front-row seat to an extraordinary era. He was part of the Albiceleste squads that lifted the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America, and then pushed all the way to the 2026 World Cup final.
