Gavin Bazunu Joins Bolton Wanderers to Revive Career

Gavin Bazunu has drawn a line under his Southampton spell and dropped back into the Championship with Bolton Wanderers, signing a three-year deal that he hopes will relaunch his club and international career.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, still only 24, swaps St Mary’s for the Toughsheet Community Stadium after slipping down the pecking order at Southampton, despite making 19 Championship appearances last season.

Bazunu arrived at Southampton from Manchester City in 2022 as a long-term project, but his trajectory stalled. Injuries and competition for the No 1 shirt nudged him to the fringes, and the second half of the 2025-26 campaign was spent on an injury-affected loan at Stoke City. Before that, the club had already sent him to Belgian top-flight side Standard Liege in search of rhythm and experience.

Those moves never quite turned into the consistent run he craved. Bolton is designed to change that.

Bazunu, capped 22 times by Ireland, made it clear that regular football drove his decision to move for an undisclosed fee.

"It's obviously a club with massive history. I see it as a place where I can come and progress my personal career, while helping the team with their ambitions of getting back to where they belong," he told Wanderers TV.

That word – belong – matters at Bolton, a club still fuelled by memories of Premier League nights and European trips. Bazunu wants to be central to the push.

"I want to get back to being in a position where I’m playing week in, week out and enjoying my football again. My big aim and ambition here is to play as many games as I can and show my levels.

"I’m excited to be here and excited for what’s to come. I’m sure all the other new signings will have said the same thing, but we’re excited to get going, show our qualities and show where this team belongs."

For Ireland, the move will be watched closely. Bazunu’s last cap came in March 2024 in a friendly against Switzerland, and his most recent call-up under Heimir Hallgrimsson was in November of that year. If he finds his rhythm in Bolton colours and nails down that starting spot, the battle for the Ireland No 1 shirt could quickly ignite again.
