Gavi Declines Manchester United Transfer, Commits to Barcelona Future
Manchester United faced a setback in their summer transfer plans when Barcelona midfielder Gavi turned down their offer. Manager Michael Carrick had earmarked the Spanish star as a key addition to strengthen his midfield. Despite United's interest and willingness to meet a £35 million valuation, Gavi remains loyal to the Catalan club, preparing for fresh contract talks at Camp Nou.
United’s Midfield Plans Hit a Wall
The Mirror reports that Gavi has no intention of moving to the Premier League, dealing a blow to Manchester United. Carrick was keen to add the 22-year-old to his squad ahead of the new season, but Gavi’s refusal forces the club to rethink their options after spending around £85 million on Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. They now need to find a third midfielder before the window closes.
Gavi’s Roots and Role at Barcelona
Having joined Barcelona at age 11, Gavi has made 119 league appearances since debuting in 2021. He recently was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, although he did not play in the final against Argentina. Despite new signing Rodri, Barcelona sees Gavi as a cornerstone under coach Hansi Flick, who has helped him regain form after a knee injury sidelined him for five months last season. Gavi is also eager to one day captain the team.
On His Recovery and Relationship with Flick
"I have suffered a lot, unfortunately, in these last two years. It's football," Gavi said. "They were serious injuries and you have to be mentally strong, and I have been. It's a strong point of mine. I'm at this level because of the mentality I have. It is not easy to play at this pace, coming from two serious injuries. I've done it and I'm proud. Luckily, the coach trusts me a lot. He's like a father to me. I am very grateful to him. It's not easy to get to play after this injury. He knows about my talent and mentality and that it's important for the team. He blindly trusts me."
What’s Next for Gavi and Manchester United?
Barcelona plans to begin contract renewal talks soon to secure Gavi’s future beyond 2030. Meanwhile, Manchester United must shift focus to other midfield targets as the transfer deadline nears. The club is also expected to seek a new left-back to finalize their summer deals.
