Galatasaray Aims for Historic Fifth Straight Title in Super Lig
The Turkish Super Lig returns on Friday night, and Galatasaray stand on the brink of history. Four titles in a row already in the bag. One more, and they set a new benchmark: five consecutive championships, something the league has never seen.
The 69th season of Türkiye’s top flight opens at Rams Park, under the lights, with the champions hosting newly promoted Corum FK at 9.30 pm local time (1830GMT). Okan Buruk’s side arrive as the standard-setters once again, fresh from clinching their 26th league crown in May and stretching their dominance over the rest of the country.
This time, though, the chase pack looks armed and dangerous.
Istanbul giants reload
Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor have all spent aggressively, ripping up last season’s script and writing a far more ambitious one. The message is blunt: Galatasaray will not have it all their own way.
Fenerbahce, runners-up last term and still haunted by a title drought that dates back to 2014, have gone big. Very big. The Istanbul club landed Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Napoli this week, a headline signing to spearhead their push. He joins an already eye-catching summer haul that includes English winger Mason Greenwood from Olympique Marseille and Netherlands defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City.
They start their campaign in Ankara on Saturday, away to Genclerbirligi in a fixture that will immediately test how quickly this revamped side can click.
Besiktas have answered with firepower of their own. The Black Eagles moved for Serbia international Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus, adding a central striker with serious pedigree, and brought in Belgian winger Leandro Trossard from Arsenal to sharpen their wide threat. Their season begins at home on Sunday night against Eyupspor, a stage perfectly set for their new forwards to introduce themselves to the Vodafone Park crowd.
A seismic move on the Black Sea
Just when it looked like the story would be written in Istanbul again, Trabzonspor tore up the narrative. One of the summer’s most stunning deals came from the Black Sea coast, where the club secured Egypt captain Mohamed Salah on a two-year contract.
It is a signing that shifts the mood around the league. Trabzonspor have made it clear: they are not just aiming to be awkward opponents for the big three. They want in on the title conversation, and Salah’s arrival is a statement aimed squarely at the Istanbul giants.
Their campaign opens on Saturday at 7 pm (1600GMT) away to Kasimpasa, a tricky first assignment for a side suddenly carrying the weight of new expectations.
New faces, new stories
Eighteen clubs will contest the 2026-27 Super Lig season, with three promoted sides bringing fresh energy and intrigue: Erzurumspor, Amedspor and Corum FK.
Amedspor, in particular, step into uncharted territory as they make their Super Lig debut. They begin with a compelling Sunday night matchup against Erzurumspor FK at 9.30 pm (1830GMT), a meeting of two clubs eager to plant an early flag in the division. Erzurumspor return to the top flight after a five-year absence, intent on proving they are back to stay.
Corum FK, meanwhile, face the toughest possible introduction: away to the champions at Rams Park on opening night. For Galatasaray, it is the first step on a potential march into history. For Corum, it is a chance to shock the league before it has even settled into its seat.
The season will run through to May 2027, with storylines already stacked high before a ball has been kicked.
