According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli are still scouring the market for attacking reinforcements in the final stretch of the summer window, weighing up several names as they go. One preference, though, has not shifted.
Massimiliano Allegri continues to see Gabriel Jesus as his ideal centre-forward signing. Other options are being checked, calls are being made, but the Arsenal striker sits at the top of the list.
The problem? Time is running, and the deal remains stuck in negotiation territory.
Jesus training alone, Arteta explains
While the two clubs explore a possible agreement, Jesus has slipped out of the usual rhythm at London Colney. The Brazilian is currently training away from the main Arsenal group, a detail that inevitably fuels speculation around his future.
Mikel Arteta moved to frame that decision in broader squad-management terms.
"It's something to do with the numbers that we have in the squad at the moment and the way we're managing that kind of situation individually with all the players – they have some personal situations," Arteta said.
He stressed that the communication with Jesus has been open and honest.
"Yes, for sure (he's spoken to Jesus). Those conversations go both ways, but I'm very satisfied with how these conversations went because I know what is in each other's hearts.
"The words that come through in those conversations make me really happy. It's inevitable at some point you need to have certain discussions and say certain things that sometimes are tough."
Arteta’s message: nothing explosive, but clearly a player in a delicate phase of his Arsenal spell.
Napoli wait on the green light
Previous reports indicated that Jesus himself had shown a degree of hesitation about joining Napoli. Whether that stance has softened remains unclear, and that uncertainty hangs over the entire operation.
There was a burst of optimism earlier this month. Fenerbahce struck a deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from Napoli, clearing one of the exits the Italian club needed before they could fully commit to a move for Jesus. That felt like the first domino.
The chain reaction has not followed as quickly as anticipated. Talks have slowed, and the window is closing fast.
For Arsenal, Jesus’ contract situation sharpens the stakes. With his deal expiring next year, this is effectively their last realistic chance to secure a significant fee. The club are understood to be pushing in these final days, aware that letting the striker run down his contract would almost certainly weaken their position.
Napoli still want him. Allegri still wants him. Arsenal are ready to cash in.
