Fulham Signs Angel from Real Madrid to Boost Midfield
Alvaro Arbeloa has gone back to what he knows best. After two straight Premier League defeats, the Fulham head coach has once again dipped into Real Madrid’s talent pool, this time landing 22-year-old midfielder Angel.
It is already a familiar route. Earlier in the window, Fulham brought in Shea Charles along with Real Madrid duo Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios. Now Angel, another product of Valdebebas, arrives to deepen Arbeloa’s Madrid-flavoured rebuild.
The Spaniard has signed a three-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. Standard Sport understands he initially joins on a one-year loan, which will automatically become a permanent move worth £18.3million. The club have confirmed he will then be tied down to a long-term deal.
Arbeloa knows exactly what he is getting. He previously handed Angel the captain’s armband at Real Madrid Castilla, trusting him to lead the club’s B team before promoting him to the senior squad midway through the season. Both coach and player stepped up together, and Angel did not simply make up the numbers.
He went on to make four La Liga appearances and featured in the Champions League, a significant step for a player still only 22. That experience, in Arbeloa’s eyes, has hardened a midfielder he already considered a leader in the academy.
Angel’s admiration for his coach runs deep.
“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them.
“Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”
Fulham are not just buying potential. Angel arrives with a winning habit. Previously a league and cup champion with Malmo in Sweden, he comes in as a clear replacement for Sasa Lukic, who left for Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the summer.
For Angel, this move carries weight beyond tactics and systems.
“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” he said after signing his contract.
The timing is no accident. Fulham need a spark after their slow start, and Arbeloa has turned to someone he trusts to inject energy and control into midfield. Angel, alongside fellow new arrival Larsson, will now push to be involved immediately.
Both could make their Fulham debuts this weekend, when the Cottagers host Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage. Under the lights, with the Premier League already demanding answers, Arbeloa’s Madrid project will take its next, very public, step.
