Fenerbahce Denies Transfer Rumors for Chelsea's Jamie Gittens
Fenerbahce have moved swiftly and fiercely to shut down talk that they are lining up a move for Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, branding the speculation “completely unfounded”.
Reports had suggested the Turkish club were exploring a deal for the 22-year-old just a year after his big-money switch to Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund. The noise gathered pace online, with social media pushing the idea of a quick escape route from London after a difficult debut campaign.
Fenerbahce were having none of it.
‘Completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth’
The Istanbul giants issued a strongly worded statement on Saturday, making it crystal clear they are not pursuing Gittens and accusing unnamed parties of trying to drag the club into a manufactured transfer saga.
“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the club said.
They didn’t stop there. The club railed against what it described as attempts to use Fenerbahce’s name to stir up headlines and shape the agenda around their transfer business.
“We once again clearly state that attempts to manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas will have no effect.
“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs.
“Therefore, we expect this approach of using our club's name to create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions to cease.”
The message was unmistakable: they will choose their targets, not have them assigned by rumour.
Eyes on Gençlerbirliği, not Stamford Bridge
Having put out the fire, Fenerbahce underlined where their attention really lies — the opening weekend of the new Trendyol Super League season.
“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League.
“We respectfully request that our great Fenerbahçe fans disregard such unfounded news and continue their support for our teams only by considering the statements made through our club's official channels.”
The club’s stance leaves the Gittens story right back where it started: at Chelsea, with a young winger still trying to prove he belongs in the Premier League.
Gittens’ stop-start Chelsea start
Gittens arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer with real expectation attached, Chelsea paying a total of £51.5 million to bring him in from Borussia Dortmund. The raw numbers from his first season tell the story of a campaign that never quite caught fire.
He made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and supplying five assists. There were flashes, but no sustained run. Rhythm deserted him, and then so did his hamstring.
A serious hamstring problem sidelined him for more than 100 days and forced him to miss 22 games. His last competitive outing for Chelsea came back on January 31, a stark reminder of how long he has been fighting just to get back on the pitch.
Alonso’s call to make
The arrival of Xabi Alonso has reset the picture at Chelsea. Every player is under fresh assessment, and Gittens is no exception. This time, though, there are signs the new head coach sees something to work with.
Alonso has used Gittens in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season friendlies so far this summer. The winger has responded with a goal and an assist, hinting at the impact he can offer when fit and trusted.
That leaves Alonso with a clear decision as the new campaign looms: keep Gittens in the fold as a live option out wide, or look for a different solution in a squad already heavy with attacking talent. What Fenerbahce’s statement has done is remove one potential escape route from the conversation, at least for now.
With the Turkish links emphatically dismissed, the focus for Gittens turns to the Premier League opener. He is in contention to be involved when Chelsea travel across west London to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24 — a fixture that could mark the start of a very different second season for a player still trying to justify that £51.5m fee.
