FC Cincinnati Sign Tyrell Malacia on Free Transfer
FC Cincinnati have made one of the headline moves of the MLS summer, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and handing him a long-term deal in Ohio.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has signed a contract through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 season, as Cincinnati double down on their push to remain among the Eastern Conference elite. For a club that has built steadily and carefully, this is a marquee addition — a defender with Champions League and World Cup experience, now anchoring their back line.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get the deal over the line, Cincinnati’s front office had to work the MLS rulebook hard. The club secured an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money in the opposite direction.
That price tag underlines how heavily the club is betting on Malacia. He isn’t a depth piece. He’s a pillar. General Manager Chris Albright made that clear, calling out the value of Malacia’s experience as the club unveiled their new signing.
The message from the boardroom is simple: this is a team planning to stay near the top, not drift back into the pack.
A break from Old Trafford frustrations
For Malacia, the move is a reset. His time at Manchester United started brightly after his 2022 switch from Feyenoord. Erik ten Hag trusted him early, and the Dutch full-back’s aggressive defending and energy on the flank quickly won admirers.
Then the injuries hit.
Fitness problems repeatedly stalled his momentum, limiting his availability and breaking up any rhythm he tried to build in the Premier League and in Europe. Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, gaining a crash course in life at one of the game’s most scrutinized clubs.
Now he crosses the Atlantic with that education behind him and a point to prove.
Experience for the “Orange and Blue”
Cincinnati aren’t just getting a name; they’re getting miles on the clock. Malacia arrives with more than 250 professional games in European football, having gone up against some of the world’s sharpest attackers in both the Premier League and Champions League.
That kind of résumé doesn’t often land in MLS without a transfer fee attached.
Inside the “Orange and Blue” locker room, he instantly becomes one of the most battle-tested players on the roster. Outside it, the club has already started building the buzz, teasing his arrival across social media as supporters wait for a first glimpse of him in competitive action.
Silverware and a winning habit
Injury setbacks may have clouded his spell in England, but Malacia’s medal collection still carries weight.
He was part of the Manchester United squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a long-awaited return to silverware for the club. More recently, a loan move back to the Netherlands brought another high point, as he contributed to PSV Eindhoven’s Eredivisie title triumph in the 2024-25 season.
That winning streak extends to the international stage. Malacia has nine senior caps for the Netherlands and was selected in the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Dutch reached the quarter-finals before their dramatic exit.
From Old Trafford to Eindhoven to a World Cup run, he has lived the pressure of games that define seasons and careers.
Now those experiences belong to FC Cincinnati. The only question left is how far they can ride them in MLS.
