Enzo Fernandez Set for Manchester City Move as Deadline Approaches

Manchester City have struck an initial agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez, with the World Cup-winning midfielder now racing the clock to seal a dramatic deadline-day switch.

City only moved decisively at the start of the week. As reported by British outlet The Sun, senior figures at the Etihad opened direct talks with Chelsea on Monday over the 25-year-old, finally turning long-standing interest into concrete negotiations in the final hours of the window.

The move would reunite Fernandez with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea head coach who succeeded Pep Guardiola at City in the summer. What was once a controversial sacking at Stamford Bridge could now shape the spine of Maresca’s new project in Manchester.

Time, though, is brutal. Fernandez must have every stage of the transfer wrapped up before the window shuts at 11pm local time tonight. Any delay, any paperwork snag, and the deal dies for at least another four months.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed that an initial agreement between the clubs is in place. Fernandez is now waiting for the formal green light to travel for his medical, the final hurdle before he can complete the move.

Chelsea, for their part, have gone quiet.

Xabi Alonso left Fernandez out of the squad for Sunday’s clash with Brighton, a decision that only intensified speculation over the midfielder’s future. Asked afterwards whether Fernandez had already played his last game for the club, Alonso refused to be drawn.

“We’ll see. We want what’s best for the team, which is why we made the decision against Luton and today, and anything that happens before Tuesday evening, we need to be aware of how things will develop,” the Spaniard said.

He kept the door open to every outcome.

“We’re not sure, we’re preparing for all scenarios, but I’m certain that whatever happens from Wednesday, we’ll have a good enough squad to compete in all the Premier League matches.”

For Fernandez, the prospect of rejoining Maresca carries a sharp emotional edge. Back in January, when Chelsea dismissed the Italian, the midfielder publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy.

“I don’t understand it,” he told Mexican network TUDN. “Sometimes there are things we don’t understand as players, and how and in what way they try to manage matters.”

The decision, he said, cut deep.

“Clearly it was a departure that hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, as it cuts everything off suddenly.”

Fernandez had been one of Maresca’s staunchest admirers at Stamford Bridge, and he made no secret of how much he valued the coach’s work.

“We had an identity. He gave us a system, although according to the nature of football, things are sometimes good and sometimes bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing,” he continued.

Now that identity could be rebuilt in sky blue rather than Chelsea blue, with Maresca shaping City’s next era and pushing hard to bring a trusted lieutenant with him.

The agreement is there. The player is ready. The only opponent left is the clock.
