Ebbsfleet United Cleared to Kick Off Season After Suspension Lifted

Ebbsfleet United have been cleared to finally kick off their season on Saturday after the National League lifted the club’s suspension.

The Kent side saw their first six National League South fixtures wiped from the calendar as they wrestled with serious financial problems, culminating in a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs over unpaid debts stretching back to April.

The crisis eased last month when new owner John O’Leary completed a takeover. That deal allowed Ebbsfleet to settle what they owed HMRC and pay outstanding wages to players.

In a statement on Wednesday, the club thanked supporters, players and staff for standing firm during the turmoil, praising the squad and employees for their conduct while the future of the club hung in the balance.

The reprieve does not come without a warning. The league’s compliance and licensing committee has issued Ebbsfleet with a suspended six-point deduction, which will be activated if the club fails to meet a series of yet-to-be-detailed “obligations” set by the authorities.

Earlier this week, the sixth-tier outfit submitted a full financial dossier to the National League, including proof that funds are in place to clear all remaining liabilities. HMRC, the club said, has confirmed there are no outstanding sums due.

The committee met on Tuesday and, satisfied enough to let football resume, lifted the suspension. Ebbsfleet can now host Walton & Hersham on Saturday and at last begin a campaign that has been stuck in limbo since August.

The handbrake is not fully off, though. A transfer embargo remains, with the club still barred from registering new players.

In a statement, the National League said that while it still believes there are “issues for the club to satisfy the league on” regarding its rules and regulations, it has lifted the suspension “with immediate effect” and will stay in close contact as Ebbsfleet work through the remaining conditions.

The message is clear: the gates can open again at Ebbsfleet United, but any slip in compliance could carry a heavy price.
