Derby County Secures First Win with Salvesen's Stunning Goal

Derby County’s stuttering start finally met its answer in the right boot of Lars-Jorgen Salvesen.

After opening the season without a win, the Rams dug out their first three points against Portsmouth, and it came with a finish that screamed conviction rather than relief. Former Derby midfielder Darren Robinson could hardly hide his admiration for the decisive strike.

“It was a quality finish in the way he came on to the ball and it was a confident finish,” Robinson said, summing up the moment that broke the game open.

Portsmouth had peppered Derby’s goal from range for much of the contest. Shots flew in from distance, territory was gained, but the visitors never quite found the blade to cut Derby open. The volume was there. The edge was not.

“There were lots of shots from distance, particularly from Portsmouth, but they lacked that cutting edge,” Robinson noted.

Salvesen provided exactly that. When the chance arrived, he didn’t snatch at it or try to place it delicately. He strode on to the ball and unleashed.

“You watch that finish by Salvesen,” Robinson said. “He comes on to it and he absolutely thumps it – it was still rising as it hit the back of the net.”

The timing mattered almost as much as the technique. Fratton Park energy had begun to swell after the break, Portsmouth feeding off the crowd, Derby forced to weather a spell of pressure. The home side looked ready to turn momentum into something more dangerous.

“It was an important time to score because the crowd were building a bit of energy,” Robinson explained. “Portsmouth had given that reaction after half-time and that really burst the bubble.”

One strike, rising all the way in, punctured the noise and reset Derby’s season. Now the question is whether that thumping finish becomes a turning point or just a highlight in isolation.
