Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United: A Special Journey

Dan Burn’s rise from the stands to the armband is complete.

Newcastle United’s boyhood fan-turned-defender has been named the club’s permanent captain, filling the vacancy left after Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure. New head coach Matthias Jaissle confirmed the decision on Saturday, ending any debate over who would lead the team into a new era.

For Burn, it hits differently.

“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said, the announcement landing like a milestone in a journey that began long before he pulled on the shirt. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.”

This is not a token gesture. Since arriving in 2021, Burn has made 193 appearances for Newcastle, a constant presence through European pushes, cup runs and the club’s rapid transformation on and off the pitch. He has been the dependable one, the local lad living the dream while quietly setting standards.

“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments,” he reflected. “I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”

Jaissle has wasted no time nailing his colours to the mast. In Burn, he sees his dressing-room reference point.

“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the head coach said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.”

The praise did not stop at what Burn produces between the white lines.

“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself,” Jaissle added. “Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”

A local voice, a trusted figure, and now the permanent captain. As Newcastle step into a new chapter under Jaissle, Burn won’t just be on the pitch for it.

He’ll be the one leading them out.
