Cristiano Ronaldo's Chelsea Transfer Blocked by Thomas Tuchel

Cristiano Ronaldo’s turbulent second spell at Manchester United came closer to taking a dramatic London twist than many realised.

In the summer of 2022, as Todd Boehly began reshaping Chelsea in his first transfer window as owner, Stamford Bridge briefly opened as a potential escape route for the unsettled Portuguese star. Ronaldo, now at Al-Nassr, was stuck in a fractured United side that had just finished sixth in the Premier League and was searching for a way out of Old Trafford.

Boehly, who also stepped in as interim sporting director during that chaotic early phase of his ownership, sat down with Jorge Mendes. According to The Athletic, the American was genuinely intrigued by the idea of making Ronaldo one of the centrepieces of his new era. The proposal went beyond a tentative enquiry: Ronaldo’s name moved to the heart of Chelsea’s internal discussions as Boehly weighed the commercial and sporting impact of landing one of the game’s global icons.

From Boehly’s perspective, the timing looked perfect. Ronaldo’s second United stint, which ran from 2021 to 2023, was unravelling. What began as a triumphant homecoming had curdled into frustration, reduced minutes and an increasingly uneasy relationship with the club. Chelsea, meanwhile, were searching for a new attacking focal point and a statement signing to announce the Boehly regime.

The owner pushed the idea. Mendes explored the route. The door seemed to be opening.

Then Thomas Tuchel shut it.

The then-Chelsea head coach, fresh from winning the Champions League the year before, held the decisive voice on football matters. As reported by The Athletic, Tuchel “made his firm opposition to any agreement for the Portuguese forward very clear on several occasions.” He did not waver. His stance killed the move, halting Boehly’s Ronaldo project before it could advance beyond the exploratory stage.

Boehly had tested the waters with Mendes. Stamford Bridge had been placed on the table. But Tuchel’s refusal closed that chapter, leaving Ronaldo to see out his troubled United spell and Chelsea to pursue a very different vision of their future.
