Cristian Orozco Impresses with Goal for Manchester United U21s

Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they have on their hands.

The Colombian midfielder, only able to officially sign earlier this summer after turning 18, has already opened his account for the club with a goal for the Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

It was not a tight contest. United’s youngsters ran riot in a 5-0 win as preparations intensified for the new season, with Orozco stepping into the scoresheet on one of his first outings in red.

The defensive midfielder, recruited from Fortaleza after an aggressive overseas scouting drive led by director of football Jason Wilcox, arrived at Old Trafford with a strong reputation but only limited senior experience. He had made just five first-team appearances for the Brazilian side before United moved in, and his last competitive game came in May in a Copa Colombia draw against Cucuta Deportivo.

Any suggestion of rust did not show.

The pressure told early and often on Villa’s back line. Chido Obi, who had already hit a brace in a win over Ipswich earlier in the month, continued his hot streak in front of goal against another Premier League rival’s academy side. Ashton Missin also struck twice, while Amir Ibragimov joined the party to complete the rout.

Orozco’s inclusion and impact underlined why United were so keen to lure him from South America. The Colombia Under-17s captain is seen as a long-term project rather than an immediate first-team solution, and the club have mapped out a patient development plan rather than throwing him straight into the senior spotlight.

That caution is understandable given the traffic ahead of him in midfield.

Old Trafford boss Michael Carrick has already strengthened heavily in that area, investing in Andrey Santos to add energy and depth in the centre of the pitch. Youri Tielemans then followed, with United activating the £35 million release clause in the Belgian’s Aston Villa contract to bring him to Manchester.

Those moves mean Orozco’s pathway will be carefully managed. He will have to wait, learn, and build his case away from the glare of the Premier League.

For now, the message from the teenager is simple: he is here, he is settling, and he has already started scoring. The debut at Old Trafford can wait — the groundwork has begun.
