Cole Palmer's Future: Chelsea Star Linked to Manchester United Move
Two of Chelsea’s leading lights are eyeing a move to Manchester United somewhere down the line, with Cole Palmer strongly tipped as one of them, according to fresh reports.
United have already raided Stamford Bridge once this summer, prising Andrey Santos away in a £50million deal as INEOS backed Michael Carrick with a major midfield signing. That move may only be the start.
United’s pull returns
Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United correspondent for The Sun, reports that two of Chelsea’s biggest names “would relish” a switch to Old Trafford in the future – but only if United keep moving in the right direction on the pitch.
“United still have pull,” the piece states, stressing that any dream move hinges on the club maintaining momentum under Carrick. The warning is clear. The last time United finished third, they crashed to eighth the following season under Erik ten Hag, losing 14 league games and leaving the Dutchman clinging to his job before an eventual parting of ways.
Carrick, described as “Wilcox’s man” in reference to sporting director Jason Wilcox, now leads a side back in the Champions League and expected by supporters to at least mount a credible Premier League title challenge, even if they are not favourites to lift the trophy.
If that progress holds, the door could open for those Chelsea stars.
Palmer at the heart of the speculation
The Sun’s report does not name the two Chelsea players, but all roads point towards Cole Palmer being one of them.
Despite his Manchester City past, Palmer is widely regarded as a boyhood United fan. At 24, the England international has already established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking midfielders and the central figure in Chelsea’s rebuild.
TEAMtalk revealed on January 27, 2026, that United wanted to sign Palmer in the summer of 2026 and that the player was willing, at that point, to swap Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford. The move never materialised. Palmer publicly played down the talk, and Chelsea had no intention of cashing in on their talisman this summer.
But Chelsea’s recent history offers a twist. As Enzo Fernandez’s deadline-day switch to Manchester City underlined, the club will sell elite talent if the price is high enough. No one at Stamford Bridge is completely off the market when the numbers get silly.
Ex-Blues split on Palmer’s future
Former Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas believes Palmer will eventually follow his heart to United – just not yet.
Speaking to Metro on August 2, Gallas said: “I don’t think Cole Palmer will go right now. I don’t think it’s time to go right now.
“He will definitely go to Manchester United in the future if he’s a big fan, if he’s got a dream to play for Man United, he will definitely go there, but right now I don’t think so.
“I think he needs to have one more big season as he did two years ago, before he got his injury problem, then he might move.”
Another former Chelsea defender, Wayne Bridge, sees it very differently. For him, a Palmer exit to Old Trafford would be a gut punch for his old club.
Bridge said in March 2026: “It probably makes sense for Cole Palmer because he’s a Man United fan. But personally, I don’t know him, so I wouldn’t know what he’s thinking.
“It might make sense for Manchester United – every club would love to take Cole Palmer – but it doesn’t make sense for Chelsea.
“As an ex-Chelsea player, I’d be gutted if he went there. I’d have a word with him and say, ‘Look, remember what happened to Mason Mount – come on now, don’t go anywhere.
“He’s the main man at Chelsea. Chelsea wants to build the team around Cole Palmer.”
That is the crux of it. At Chelsea, Palmer is the project. At United, he would be the statement.
For now, he stays put, front and centre at Stamford Bridge. But if Carrick’s United keep climbing and Chelsea keep cashing in, how long can that hold?
