Chelsea Open Talks for Defender Honest Ahanor
Chelsea have opened talks with Atalanta over highly rated Italy defender Honest Ahanor, sounding out both the Serie A club and the player’s entourage as they explore a potential deal.
The London club’s interest comes in the same summer Atalanta firmly pushed back a €34m bid from Brighton, underlining just how highly the Bergamo side value the 18-year-old. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli made it clear in July that Atalanta do not want to lose any of their best and most promising talents, and Ahanor sits firmly in that bracket.
Atalanta’s stance is strong. Their message has been consistent: hands off their core players as Giuntoli embarks on his first season in charge alongside new coach Maurizio Sarri, with whom he previously worked successfully at Napoli. They see Ahanor as a pillar of their project, not a trading chip.
Ahanor joined Atalanta from Genoa in 2025 in a €16m move, and his rise since then has been sharp. Comfortable as a left wing-back or on the left of a back three, he offers a blend of defensive aggression and tactical versatility that top clubs crave. That flexibility is exactly the sort of profile Chelsea have been targeting as they reshape their squad.
The teenager has already banked 28 Serie A appearances and stepped onto the international stage in June, making his senior Italy debut under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini. For an 18-year-old defender, that combination of league minutes and national-team exposure makes him one of the standout prospects in his position.
Chelsea know Atalanta well. The two clubs have already done business this summer, with Marco Palestra swapping the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m deal. That recent agreement could help smooth communication, but it will not automatically soften Atalanta’s resolve over Ahanor.
For now, the talks are only at a preliminary stage. The question is simple: how hard are Chelsea prepared to push, and at what price will Atalanta even consider breaking up a defence they are trying to build around one of Italy’s brightest young defenders?
