Chelsea's Tactical Changes Impact Estevao Willian

Chelsea’s first attacking reshuffle of the night has landed – and it doesn’t look good for Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian.

Chasing the game at 1-0 down to Brentford with around 70 minutes gone, Xabi Alonso finally played his hand. The new Chelsea head coach hooked Danny Welbeck, pushed Morgan Rogers into the central striker role and sent on Geovany Quenda to occupy Rogers’ usual slot on the left.

For Estevao, watching from the bench again, that change stings.

The teenager was already under the microscope for failing to break into the Premier League starting XI. Now he’s seen another attacking option leapfrog him in the in-game pecking order. Quenda gets the call; Estevao stays sat, waiting.

There is a tactical logic behind it. Quenda is a natural fit on the left. Estevao prefers the right flank or a more central role. Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s creative heartbeat, is locked into that right-sided berth. Alonso clearly has no intention of shunting Palmer out of position just to squeeze Estevao in, and neither Palmer nor the Brazilian is at their sharpest when flipped over to the left.

So Estevao is caught in a tactical bottleneck, even as Chelsea chase an equaliser.

He will likely be the next attacking option Alonso turns to, but the optics matter. Not being the first attacking substitute when your team is struggling for a goal is another small setback in his early Chelsea story. His frustration can only grow as he watches Pedro Neto grind away on the right wing for the full 90 minutes, occupying the very space he craves.

Standout Performance

While the focus lingers on the forward line, one veteran has quietly imposed himself.

Jordan Henderson, making his Chelsea debut, emerged as the standout performer in the first half. No tricks, no showreel moments – just calm passing, steady positioning and a sense of order in a midfield that has often looked frantic in recent months.

For Henderson, it’s a significant personal milestone. For Chelsea, it’s an early clue as they piece together their midfield hierarchy under Alonso. If the attack is still a puzzle, the experienced England international has at least given his manager one reliable piece in the centre of the pitch.
