Chelsea Signs Ahanor on Loan Before Permanent Move

Chelsea have sealed a deal for teenage defender Ahanor – but Crystal Palace will see him first.

Standard Sport revealed last week that the Blues had struck an agreement for the 18-year-old, tying up personal terms and clearing him to travel to London for a medical. The structure of the move has now taken shape: Ahanor will officially arrive at Selhurst Park on loan from Atalanta before heading to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2027.

It is an unusual three-club chain, but not the only link between Chelsea and Palace this summer. Axel Disasi has already crossed the capital on a season-long loan to the Eagles, a deal with no option or obligation to buy. With Disasi in the building, Chelsea have opted to park Ahanor’s Premier League introduction in south London rather than on their own congested training pitches.

For Palace, it is a significant coup. Ahanor comes through Genoa’s academy system and has already broken into the Italy senior set-up, winning two caps after making his debut earlier this year. At club level he has moved quickly too: 28 Serie A appearances for Atalanta last season and a Champions League debut in September underline why Chelsea were so keen to lock in his long-term future.

While one piece of Chelsea’s defensive planning is now clear, the midfield picture is anything but settled.

The club remain interested in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are exploring a move for the 22-year-old. That pursuit sits against growing uncertainty over Enzo Fernandez, who has now missed back-to-back Chelsea matches amid strong interest from Manchester City.

Fernandez was absent again for the wild 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend. Asked to explain the decision, Blues head coach Xabi Alonso was blunt about the standards he expects from anyone in his squad.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," he said.

Chelsea have locked down a defender for the future, loaned another to a Premier League rival and are weighing up a major midfield reshuffle. The only question now is how different this squad will look by the time Ahanor finally walks through the doors at Cobham in 2027.
