Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is accelerating – and Enzo Fernandez’s path to Manchester City might just be clearing with it.
The London club have reached an agreement on personal terms with Roma midfielder Manu Koné and have now lodged a formal bid, according to multiple reports across Europe. All this unfolds while Chelsea hold firm on their £120m valuation of Fernandez, a fee City are prepared to meet to make the Argentine the most expensive midfielder in football history and their own record signing.
Chelsea line up Koné as key domino
Chelsea’s stance on Fernandez has been consistent: they will sell, but only on two conditions. The £120m price must be met, and a suitable replacement must be through the door first.
That second condition is where Koné comes in.
FootballTransfers report that Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old and are now working to strike a deal with Roma before the window shuts. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, revealing that Chelsea have made official contact with the Serie A club and that talks are ongoing over the midfielder’s future.
Roma, though, are not exactly rolling out the exit door.
Italian reporter Nico Schira claims Chelsea have tabled an offer worth €65m (£56m) for Koné, even as Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is said to consider the player “non-transferable”. Schira adds that the final call will rest with the midfielder himself and Roma owner Dan Friedkin.
Just as that figure started to circulate, another heavyweight voice in the Italian market offered a slightly different picture. Gianluca Di Marzio has described the negotiations as “advanced” and put the prospective fee at around £52m, underlining that the deal is moving but not yet over the line.
Enzo’s future tied to Chelsea’s next move
All of this matters because of one man: Enzo Fernandez.
The World Cup winner is keen on the move to Manchester City, and City are ready to go to £120m to get him. At that price, the transfer would eclipse previous midfield deals and reset the market once again, while also becoming the most expensive signing in City’s history.
Chelsea, for their part, are open to selling. They just refuse to leave a hole in the middle of the pitch.
Two names have been seriously assessed as potential successors in recent days – Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Roma’s Koné – but it is the Roma man who has surged to the front of the queue. With personal terms now said to be agreed and a concrete bid lodged, the pressure is shifting onto Roma’s hierarchy and the player.
If Roma finally crack and accept an offer, Chelsea will have their replacement. And if Chelsea have their replacement, City will be one decisive step away from landing Fernandez in the defining midfield transfer of the summer.
The numbers are on the table. The positions are clear. Now it comes down to who blinks first: Roma over Koné, or Chelsea over Enzo’s green light to join Pep Guardiola’s champions.
