Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez gap – and Georginio Wijnaldum has suddenly emerged as a serious option.
Deadline day at Stamford Bridge was chaotic even by Chelsea’s recent standards. Fernandez, a World Cup winner and one of the centrepieces of their expensive rebuild, left for Manchester City in a record £125million move. The club pushed to land Lamine Camara from Monaco, but that chase collapsed before the window shut.
So Xabi Alonso starts his first weeks in charge short in the one area no manager wants to be exposed: central midfield.
Alonso turns to a familiar Premier League face
With the window closed, Chelsea’s recruitment team have been forced down a different path. No more bidding wars, no more late faxes. Just the free agent market.
That trail has led them to Wijnaldum.
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have already made contact with the 35-year-old, exploring a deal that would haul him back into the Premier League, where he previously shone for Newcastle and then Liverpool.
Wijnaldum is available after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer. Alonso views him as an experienced stopgap, a player who knows the league, understands high-intensity football and has already won the title in England, lifting the Premier League trophy with Liverpool in 2020.
A proven engine, still producing
Across his time in England, Wijnaldum racked up 277 appearances and became a key cog in one of the most dominant midfields of the modern era at Anfield. He scored crucial goals, covered endless ground and knitted together Liverpool’s structure in and out of possession.
His numbers in Saudi Arabia suggest there is still fuel in the tank. Wijnaldum struck 17 goals in 34 games for Al-Ettifaq last season, an impressive return for a midfielder, even if it did not lead to a contract extension.
For Chelsea, that profile is tempting: short-term, low-risk, high-experience. A player who can drop into the side and understand the rhythm of the league from day one.
Chelsea’s midfield puzzle
Alonso has already started to stamp his ideas on this Chelsea team. Romeo Lavia has opened the season as the central pillar of his midfield, starting both matches so far. Around him, Alonso has experimented, using Reece James and Cole Palmer in central roles.
Fernandez, meanwhile, was left out as speculation over his future intensified, before City finally got their man.
Alonso insisted after Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton that he would not cling to any individual, no matter how high-profile, if the broader project demanded change.
“We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win,” he said when asked about Fernandez’s situation.
The challenge has only grown since then. Moises Caicedo, signed for £115m and expected to be another cornerstone of the midfield, limped off on Sunday, adding another layer of anxiety to an already thin area of the squad.
A stopgap or something more?
That is the context in which Wijnaldum’s name lands on the table. A veteran of title races, Champions League nights and intense Premier League campaigns, walking into a dressing room full of young talent and sky-high expectations.
Chelsea’s hierarchy have spent the past two years betting heavily on youth and potential. Now, with Alonso needing ready-made solutions in the middle of the pitch, they are considering a very different kind of signing.
If Wijnaldum does walk back through a Premier League door, it will be into a club desperate for stability in midfield and a manager trying to build a contender on the fly.
The question is simple: will Chelsea’s next big move be a free agent who already knows exactly what it takes to win this league?
