Celtic Target Liverpool Defender Luke Chambers for January Move
Celtic are weighing up a January move for Liverpool defender Luke Chambers, with a long-standing interest in the 22-year-old now edging towards a decision point.
According to a report from journalist Alan Nixon, cited by The Celtic Bhoys, the Scottish champions have tracked Chambers for some time and could look to bring him to Parkhead in the winter window. His Liverpool deal runs out at the end of the season, leaving the door open for a cut-price move or a pre-contract agreement.
A Talent Stuck in Traffic at Anfield
Chambers is a familiar story at a club the size of Liverpool: highly rated, well-schooled, but stuck behind a wall of senior options.
The former England youth international came through the Liverpool academy and earned his first real taste of senior football with a loan spell at Kilmarnock in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign. It was a necessary step, a move to get out of the academy bubble and into the grind of first-team football.
He then featured four times under Jurgen Klopp the following season, a small window of opportunity that never quite opened fully. Liverpool chose to send him back out, first to Wigan Athletic and then to Charlton Athletic, to keep his development ticking over in the EFL.
Pre-season hinted at a different story. Chambers played a prominent role, often at centre-half as Liverpool battled a shortage of central defenders. His versatility, comfort on the ball and willingness to step into different roles caught the eye of several clubs. QPR pushed hardest and were viewed as favourites to land him before the summer deadline.
The plan seemed clear: secure a new contract at Anfield, then head out on loan. Instead, nothing happened. No new deal. No move. Just uncertainty.
The picture has only become more crowded. Liverpool have brought in Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan from Barcelona to reinforce the heart of their defence. On the left, Kostas Tsimikas remains in place to compete with and cover Milos Kerkez. Chambers, once on the fringes, now finds himself even further from the first team.
For a 22-year-old at a crucial stage of his career, another season of drifting would be costly. He needs minutes, rhythm, and a club willing to bet on him as more than emergency cover.
Why Celtic See an Opportunity
That is where Celtic come in.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have Kieran Tierney installed as first-choice left-back, with Liam Scales capable of stepping across and filling in when required. It works for now. But Tierney will be into his 30s next season, and Celtic know better than most that waiting until a decline is obvious is waiting too long.
They have already added Landon Emenalo on loan from Chelsea, a move that provides short-term depth. Chambers, though, is viewed as something different: a potential long-term answer on the left side of defence, with the added bonus of being able to operate centrally if required.
From Liverpool’s perspective, the situation is awkward. Letting Chambers leave on loan in January, with his contract running down and free agency looming in the summer, makes little sense financially. Any temporary deal would risk losing him for nothing a few months later.
That leaves three realistic paths: sell him for a modest fee in January, agree a pre-contract for a Bosman move in the summer, or finally tie him down to a new deal and revisit the loan market.
Celtic will push to exploit that uncertainty. A small fee now for a player they believe can grow into a starter, or a pre-agreement that secures him ahead of rival interest, both fit their model.
For Chambers, the choice is stark. Stay at Liverpool and fight a battle he is unlikely to win in the short term, or step into a club where European nights, title races and regular football are on offer.
If Celtic make their move in January, it could be the moment his career finally finds a clear direction.
