Jamie Carragher Criticizes Arsenal for Missing Out on £123m Liverpool Winger After Failing to Land Vinicius Junior
Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal missed a huge chance by not signing winger Bradley Barcola, who joined Liverpool in a £123 million deal this summer. The pundit argues that after failing to secure top targets like Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez, the Gunners badly needed reinforcements on the left wing.
Arsenal’s Missed Opportunity with Barcola
Barcola, a French international, signed a five-year contract at Anfield following his high-profile transfer. Earlier in the transfer window, Arsenal had considered a move for the 24-year-old but ultimately chose to look elsewhere. This allowed Liverpool, managed by Andoni Iraola, to complete the signing without much competition.
Mikel Arteta’s side has been searching for a top-class left winger for two summers running but failed to land any of their main targets.
Carragher Questions Arsenal's Transfer Decisions
On the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher expressed surprise at Arsenal’s lack of effort to secure Barcola. He sees the left wing as the weakest spot in a team otherwise boasting stars like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz.
“I’m happy it didn’t happen but I was looking at the Barcola thing. For me with Arsenal, left wing has always felt like where the drop is compared to Saka, Odegaard, and Havertz,” Carragher said.
New Signing Tzolis Shows Promise but Isn’t Enough
Carragher acknowledged that new arrival Christos Tzolis has started well for Arsenal but insists the club should have pushed harder for a marquee player like Barcola, especially after missing out on Vinicius Junior and Alvarez.
“The new kid Tzolis has made a decent start. But the longer the Barcola thing went on, and then Arsenal didn’t get Vinicius Jr or Alvarez, I was thinking is that [signing Barcola] not the one?”
Left Wing Concerns Grow Ahead of Chelsea Clash
The problem is compounded by departures in the same position. Leandro Trossard has left for Besiktas, and Gabriel Martinelli is close to a £60 million move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal. That leaves Arteta relying on a depleted left flank as Arsenal prepare for a key Premier League game against Chelsea.
