Carlton Cole Predicts Joao Pedro Will Score in the High Teens This Premier League Season
Former Chelsea striker Carlton Cole believes Joao Pedro has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top forwards. Speaking to GOAL, Cole explained why the Brazilian, now wearing Chelsea's iconic No.9 shirt, could reach “high double figures” in goals this season. Pedro has already scored three times in the current 2026-27 campaign.
Pedro’s Journey and Early Impact at Chelsea
Pedro joined Chelsea in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth up to £60 million ($80 million), arriving from Brighton after impressing regularly there. Last season, he netted 20 goals across all competitions during his debut year in west London. Before Brighton, Pedro gained experience at Watford, where he began his career as a talented teenager.
Now 24, Pedro has earned eight senior caps for Brazil, although he was surprisingly left out of the 2026 World Cup squad by Carlo Ancelotti. Despite that, his strong start to the new season at Chelsea has erased any doubts.

Asked if Pedro ranks near the top among Premier League strikers, Cole said:
“He’s doing really well, the boy. When he’s not playing, you can see the effect it has on the team. That shows he’s a big part of the setup that [Xabi] Alonso is building. I think he could get into high double figures this season if he stays fit and is used properly. He’s definitely one to watch.”
Cole also mentioned Pedro’s relationship with former teammate Danny Welbeck, who supports him, making the transition smoother. He praised Chelsea’s strategy of backing Pedro on his scoring mission.
Alonso Compares Pedro to Benzema
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso wants to draw out the best in Pedro. Having worked with great strikers like Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, Alonso sees similarities between Pedro and some of the elite forwards.
“If you count how many top strikers we have in the Premier League, I’m sure Joao is there. Haaland for sure is there. I would rate him that way,” Alonso said. “He reminds me of Karim Benzema because he’s good inside the box and outside, strong with his head, very complete and intelligent. He’s still young, with things to improve, but he has many outstanding qualities.”
Looking Ahead for Pedro and Chelsea
Pedro has been recovering from a minor knee injury during the international break but remains confident about competing with stars like Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe. Chelsea had a rough patch before the break, collecting just one point from nine available in the Premier League. The Blues aim to bounce back when they host Bournemouth on October 10.
