Calvin Ramsay's Loan to St. Mirren Marks a Turning Point
Calvin Ramsay’s Liverpool story has effectively reached its final chapter, with the 23-year-old right-back heading to St. Mirren on loan for the season in what looks, in all but name, like a goodbye.
His contract at Anfield runs until the summer of 2027, yet this move carries the weight of an ending. Liverpool do retain the option to recall him in January, and the club are hardly overflowing with convincing right-back cover. But it would take a half-season in Paisley so outstanding it forces a rethink on Merseyside. Right now, this feels less like a launchpad and more like a quiet exit.
It is a far cry from the noise that greeted his arrival.
Liverpool paid £4.2m to prise Ramsay from Aberdeen in 2022, a record sale for the Scottish club. He was 18, with just 28 first-team appearances behind him, and suddenly at one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Eyebrows went up at the fee. Expectations went even higher. His first pre-season in red suggested the gamble might pay off.
Then the injuries bit. Hard.
Ramsay arrived carrying spinal issues, problems serious enough to require surgery soon after he joined. They stalled his momentum before it had really begun. What should have been a year of learning under Jürgen Klopp and shadowing Trent Alexander-Arnold turned into a battle just to get fit.
From there, the pattern became familiar. Loan after loan, each one meant to reboot a career that never quite got going at Liverpool.

If he can stay fit and play regularly, he has the chance to anchor a side in a league he knows, to prove he can be a mainstay at that level and perhaps climb again. The talent that persuaded Liverpool to spend big at 18 has not vanished. The question is whether his body will finally allow it to show.
For Liverpool, this is likely the end of a what-if. For Ramsay, it has to be the start of something else.
