Brentford Verbal Agreement to Sign El Hadji Malick Diouf for £40m

Brentford have struck a verbal agreement with West Ham to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal that could rise to £40m, as the Bees move aggressively to strengthen a squad already knocking on the door of Europe.

The 21-year-old Senegal international is set to cost an initial £35m, with a further £5m tied up in add-ons. West Ham have accepted Brentford’s offer and Diouf has been given the green light to undergo a medical.

For West Ham, it is a swift and significant turnaround. They paid £19m to bring Diouf from Slavia Prague only a year ago. Now, after relegation and a reshaping of the squad, they stand to bank a sizeable profit on a player who quickly became a regular.

Diouf started the Hammers’ Championship opener against Burnley but has been left out of the last two matchday squads as talks advanced. His absence from those games was the clearest sign that a move was close.

Brentford never really took their eyes off him. The left-back has been their top defensive target all window, even as negotiations hit a lull over the summer before roaring back into life this week. The London club, buoyed by last season’s surge, have moved decisively once the door reopened.

If completed, the transfer would bring Diouf straight back to the Premier League after the pain of going down with West Ham last season, when they finished 18th. He still impressed individually, making 34 appearances and registering five assists, his energy and delivery from the left catching plenty of attention.

That form carried onto the international stage. Diouf broke into the Senegal side last year and featured four times at the World Cup this summer, adding tournament experience to his rapid rise.

Brentford are building around that kind of profile: young, hungry, proven at a high level. Diouf is on course to become their fifth signing of the summer, joining striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony.

It fits the mood around the club. Under Keith Andrews, Brentford finished ninth last season, missing out on European football only on goal difference. They opened the new campaign in style with a commanding 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, a result that underlined their ambition as much as their quality.

Now they turn towards Sunday’s meeting with Leeds, with the prospect of another major addition close. If Diouf’s medical goes to plan, Brentford will have secured a dynamic, attack-minded left-back just as they look to turn last season’s near-miss into something bigger.
