Beşiktaş Dominates Marseille in Europa League Opener

Beşiktaş opened their UEFA Europa League journey with a statement win in Istanbul, dismantling Marseille 4-1 and taking full control of Group-stage momentum on the very first night.

The scoreline was heavy. The performance backed it up.

Early blows and a swift reply

The home side needed just 15 minutes to light up the evening. Ilhan Fakili sliced through Marseille’s back line after a sharp exchange with Olaitan, burst clear, and drilled a precise finish into the corner. One chance, one ruthless execution. Vodafone Park erupted.

Marseille, though, did not fold. On the half-hour, Abdalla dragged the French side level. He latched onto a long, raking ball from Abdelli, surged into the box from the right and drove a low shot across goal into the far corner. Clinical, and suddenly the noise in Istanbul dipped.

Just before the break, Beşiktaş should have gone in ahead. Orkun Kökçü broke free one-on-one, only to see his effort smothered by goalkeeper De Lange. That save kept it 1-1 at half-time, the game finely balanced, the tension rising.

The second half belonged to Beşiktaş. And it ran through Kökçü.

On 56 minutes, Černý restored the lead. Kökçü slipped him in, and the winger’s angled strike to the far corner kissed the post on its way in. The pressure had been building; this time Marseille could not escape.

They barely had time to reset. Three minutes later, Kökçü delivered from a corner and defender Murillo climbed highest, thumping a header into the net. From parity to a two-goal cushion in the space of four minutes – Marseille were reeling.

Beşiktaş sensed blood. Fakili almost produced the goal of the night in the 68th minute, curling a superb effort that beat De Lange but crashed back off the crossbar. The crowd gasped; Marseille clung on.

The fourth finally arrived on 81 minutes. Olaitan, involved again, combined neatly with Vlahovic before feeding Poku, who applied the finishing touch to seal a commanding 4-1 victory.

A ruthless home display, three points on the board, and a clear message sent across the Europa League: Beşiktaş are not here to make up the numbers.
