Benfica Prepare for Mourinho Exit with Marco Silva as Replacement
Benfica are bracing for the possibility of losing José Mourinho to Real Madrid – and have marked Fulham’s Marco Silva as the man to step in if the 63‑year‑old walks back into the Bernabéu.
Madrid have made Mourinho their preferred choice and talks have already taken place over a dramatic return for the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, 13 years after his first spell in the Spanish capital ended. The pull is obvious: a familiar club, a squad built to compete for the Champions League, and a president in Florentino Pérez who knows exactly what he is buying.
Benfica, who hired Mourinho only last September, are in no mood to see him leave so soon. But they also know how this game works. When Madrid call, managers listen. The Portuguese club have started to shape a contingency plan, and Silva sits high on that list.
At Fulham, Silva has earned the right to be courted. He dragged the club out of the Championship in 2022 and has kept them clear of the relegation scrap since, turning Craven Cottage into an awkward stop for anyone with European ambitions. Yet Fulham have struggled to turn stability into a sustained tilt at Europe, and that ceiling is beginning to feel tangible.
The London club want him to stay. A new contract is on the table. For now, the 48‑year‑old is stalling, weighing up whether this is the moment to jump. Benfica, currently chasing Porto in Portugal, can offer something Fulham cannot: regular Champions League football and a shot at domestic titles every season. For a coach in his prime, that is a different kind of stage.
Chelsea circling Silva as well
Silva’s dilemma is complicated by another heavyweight presence in the background. Chelsea have also placed him on their shortlist as they search for a replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed last month. The club’s hierarchy are prepared to wait until the end of the season before making their move, but the planning has already started.
At Stamford Bridge, though, there is a clear frontrunner. Xabi Alonso is viewed as the ideal candidate. His stock soared after he led Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024, a landmark triumph that confirmed his reputation as one of Europe’s sharpest emerging coaches.
Alonso is currently out of work following his dismissal by Madrid this season, and the Spaniard is understood to be targeting a job in England for his next step. Chelsea have tracked him for at least three years, seeing in him a modern tactician with the personality to handle the demands of a restless ownership and a volatile squad.
Liverpool, too, hover in the background of Alonso’s future. His name has been mentioned as a potential successor should the club decide to part ways with Arne Slot. If that door opens, the tug of Anfield, where Alonso made his name as a player, would be powerful.
Managerial dominoes waiting to fall
So the boardrooms wait. Madrid weigh up Mourinho. Benfica wait on Madrid. Silva waits on Benfica and Chelsea. Chelsea wait on Alonso, who may yet wait on Liverpool.
One decision at the Bernabéu could trigger the whole chain.
