Bayern Munich Eyes Brentford's Igor Thiago as Backup for Harry Kane Despite Transfer Freeze

Bayern Munich are reportedly considering a move for Brentford forward Igor Thiago to provide cover for Harry Kane, despite earlier claims that their summer transfer dealings were complete.

The German champions aim to strengthen their attack and have identified Thiago as a fitting backup option for Kane. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has reported serious interest from Bayern, with initial discussions underway about bringing the striker to the Bundesliga.

This need for additional striking depth grew stronger after Nicolas Jackson returned to Chelsea following his loan at Munich. While Kane remains the main attacking threat, Bayern now appear open to signing a natural number nine.

Thiago’s Impressive Premier League Performance Comes With Challenges

Last season, Thiago shined in England by scoring 22 goals in 38 Premier League appearances for Brentford, along with one assist. He finished as the league's second-highest scorer behind Erling Haaland.

Still, Bayern face obstacles in securing him. Thiago’s contract with Brentford extends until June 2031, and reports suggest it contains no release clause, meaning negotiations could be complicated.

Kane Focused on Long-Term Future at Bayern

The pursuit of a backup aligns with Kane’s plans to stay longer at Bayern. The England captain has been outstanding since joining and is expected to discuss extending his contract. At 33, he is motivated by the chance to win the Champions League with the current squad.

Last season, Kane scored 61 goals in 51 matches across all competitions, bringing his total tally for Bayern to 146 goals in 147 games.

Bayern’s Summer Strategy and Internal Options

Before rumors about Thiago surfaced, Bayern’s director Max Eberl insisted their transfer business was finished for the summer. Their focus was on specific areas, such as signing Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt to strengthen full-back roles and Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven to boost creativity on the wings.

Despite no new striker arriving yet, coach Vincent Kompany can still use internal options when Kane needs rest. For instance, Serge Gnabry has often played centrally and offers a dynamic alternative to a traditional striker.
