Barcelona’s hunt for a left-footed centre-back has taken a sharp twist, with two of the most talked‑about candidates now definitively off the table.
Matteo Moretto has made it clear: Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio are not the players Barcelona are working to sign.
A very specific profile – but not a famous name
Inside the club, there is agreement that a left-footed defender is a priority. Hansi Flick wants another specialist option to balance his back line, someone who can naturally operate on that side and strengthen the squad’s structure.
Reports in recent days painted a picture of a quiet, almost undercover operation. Moretto has now added a crucial detail: the defender does not play in Spain and is not a household name for casual fans.
That description immediately pushed Lukeba into the spotlight. The RB Leipzig defender has been followed by Barcelona, and Flick is known to appreciate the Frenchman’s ability to play both as a centre-back and as a left-back.
But that trail has gone cold.
Lukeba ‘100%’ ruled out
Despite his qualities and the long-standing links, Lukeba is not the man Barcelona are currently trying to bring in.
Moretto has ruled out the Leipzig defender “100%”, shutting down the idea that the 23-year-old is the mystery left-footed centre-back expected to arrive.
On paper, Lukeba ticks plenty of boxes. He can cover multiple positions across the back line, reads the game well, and is comfortable operating on the left, exactly the area Barcelona are looking to reinforce.
Yet the club’s real target lies elsewhere. The operation is not about simply picking from the obvious names doing the rounds in the rumour mill. The sporting department is pushing for a different profile – and one with a far lower media profile.
Inacio also off Barcelona’s shortlist
The same verdict now applies to Goncalo Inacio.
The Sporting CP defender has also been floated as a candidate in Barcelona’s search, but Moretto’s information points in the same direction: the Portuguese international is not part of the current plan.
The key detail is the level of recognition attached to the real target. According to Moretto, the player Barcelona are working on is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio.
That goes a long way to explaining the silence around his identity. There have been no sustained leaks, no daily updates, just the outline of a profile and the insistence that the club is moving under the radar.
Barcelona want this deal done quietly, for a left-footed centre-back who is not yet among the obvious names. The question now is simple: how long can they keep his name out of the spotlight?
