Barcelona sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 million
FC Barcelona have agreed the sale of Jofre Torrents to Ajax for around €6 million, including fixed fees and variables, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of the full-back’s rights, according to SPORT.
The 19-year-old is expected in Amsterdam in the coming hours to undergo his medical and sign a four-year contract with the Dutch giants, in what will be his first move away from Spain.
La Masia product closes Barcelona chapter
The deal between Barcelona and Ajax was finalised on Thursday night, when all transfer documents were signed and the agreement made official between the clubs.
With that, Torrents’ long spell at La Masia comes to an abrupt end. He joined the academy in 2017 at just ten years old and climbed through the ranks to make four official first-team appearances last season. He also featured in pre-season friendlies this summer against CE Europa and Birmingham City, hinting at a possible role under Hansi Flick that never truly materialised.
Now, he waits only for Barcelona’s final authorisation to travel. If the green light arrives quickly, he will fly immediately, complete his medical and sign his new contract. If not, the plan shifts: he would instead travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and undergo his medical on Monday.
Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, a first glimpse of the environment Torrents is walking into.
A demanding step and a crowded left flank
For Torrents, Ajax represents both a promotion and a test. A club that lives off youth, but demands instant impact.
He will fight for minutes with Caio Henrique, the Brazilian left-back who arrived earlier this summer for €10 million. The competition is clear. So is Ajax’s intent: refresh the flanks with young, technically sharp profiles.
Barcelona, for their part, secure a fee now and keep a 50% stake in any future sale. It is a financial play as much as a sporting decision.
Deco’s reshaping continues
Torrents’ departure is another move in Deco’s drive to slim down the squad before the transfer window closes. The message from the sporting director is blunt: there will be more exits.
At least five further departures are on the agenda. Marc Casado, Hector Fort, Tommy Marques, Guille Fernandez and Toni Fernandez have all been training away from the main group in recent days. Barcelona want to protect them from injury and ease negotiations as they look for new homes.
None of the five are in Hansi Flick’s plans, and all remain available on the market.
Torrents is the first to step through the exit door this week. The question now is how many more La Masia products will follow before the window slams shut – and how different Barcelona’s academy landscape will look when it does.
