Barcelona's Urgent Pursuit of Rodri: 48-Hour Deadline
Barcelona have drawn a hard line in the sand. According to Fichajes, the Catalan giants have given themselves 48 hours to close a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, aiming to unveil the Spain international at the Joan Gamper Trophy.
This is now a race against the clock, not just a transfer negotiation.
A Deal on the Edge
Talks between Barcelona and City have moved into a decisive phase, with both clubs locked in over the final numbers. City are standing firm on a package close to €80 million (£69m) before they even think about letting their midfield anchor leave.
Barcelona have already seen two proposals rejected.
- The first: €60m plus €10m in add-ons.
- The second, tweaked to reach €75m with improved variables, also failed to shift City’s stance.
The issue isn’t only the total amount. It’s how that money is paid.

- Or €65m guaranteed plus €15m in performance-related bonuses.
Those models are at the heart of the weekend’s talks. One of them, or a slight variation, will likely decide whether Rodri walks out at the Gamper Trophy in a Barcelona shirt or reports back to Pep Guardiola with his future unresolved.
Rodri’s Stance Shifts the Balance
One factor tilts the equation heavily in Barcelona’s favour: Rodri himself.
The midfielder has made it clear he wants to leave England and is prioritising a move to Camp Nou. Interest from Real Madrid has been completely ruled out, removing the only realistic domestic rival from the equation and strengthening Barcelona’s hand.
Rodri has already returned to Manchester to begin pre-season with City after asking for a short delay to sort out his future. He is training, building fitness, doing everything expected of a professional. Yet everyone involved knows his stay could be brief.
Barcelona Push the Limits
From Barcelona’s perspective, City’s demands feel high for a player with just one year left on his contract. The Catalan hierarchy, though, also recognise the reality: if they want Rodri now, and want him as the face of their midfield rebuild, they will have to come close to City’s price.
That is where Joan Laporta steps in.
The Barcelona president is set to take direct control of the final stretch of talks, with the club targeting an agreement by the end of the weekend or Monday at the latest. His involvement signals that the operation has moved beyond routine negotiation and into political territory inside the club.

Barcelona’s internal deadline is clear. If they can get the deal over the line within those 48 hours, Rodri will fly to Catalonia almost immediately.
The plan is already sketched out: first training session with his new teammates on Tuesday, then a high-profile presentation at the Joan Gamper Trophy, turning a traditional curtain-raiser into a statement of intent.
Landing Rodri would not just reshape the team on the pitch. It would also redraw Barcelona’s financial map for the rest of the summer. The final fee and wage package will heavily influence their remaining room under La Liga’s salary cap and dictate what other business they can realistically complete.
