Barcelona Pursues Rodri and Álvarez as Transfer Deadline Approaches
Barcelona are not blinking. With a little over two weeks left in the summer window, the club remain locked on to two names and two names only: Rodri and Julian Alvarez.
Inside the sporting department, according to Mundo Deportivo, there is no debate. No plan B, no parallel shortlist, no late-window scramble being prepared. The conviction is that both operations can still be dragged over the line before the market shuts.
One deal, though, is clearly further down the track than the other.
Rodri deal pushed towards decisive week
Barcelona’s optimism over Rodri rests on one pillar: the midfielder’s will to join Hansi Flick’s project.
The Spain international is back at Manchester City after his holidays, training under Pep Guardiola as normal, but in Barcelona they are convinced his mind is open to a change of scenery. That belief is driving the negotiations, even as the numbers remain a major obstacle.
City want a package in the region of €80 million. Barcelona know their second bid fell short and accept that the next proposal has to be stronger. What they do not intend to do is simply meet City’s demands in full.
Instead, the Catalan club are working on a structure heavy on bonuses and add-ons, designed to push the overall value towards roughly €70 million without committing that figure up front. City have already turned down previous approaches and are waiting for that improved offer to land on their desk.
For now, Rodri’s future hangs in the balance. There is no agreement, no breakthrough, only a negotiation shaped by a player’s preference on one side and a hard financial line on the other.
Barcelona, though, are treating the coming days as decisive. Mundo Deportivo report that the club expect the Rodri operation to be resolved – one way or another – by next week. The pressure is on, and they know it.
Alvarez battle runs into Atlético wall
If Rodri is the deal Barcelona feel they can force open, Julian Alvarez is the one they are trying to pry out of a locked room.
Atlético Madrid have taken a firm stance over the Argentine striker. They do not want to lose him, they are not entertaining discounts, and their position has turned the pursuit into a far more complex saga than the Rodri talks.
Against that backdrop, Barcelona are clinging to the same weapon: the player’s desire.
Inside the club, there is confidence that Alvarez has not let go of the idea of wearing the Blaugrana shirt. At 26, he sees this as a crucial moment in his career and is expected to keep pushing for an exit in the days ahead, still searching for a path from Atlético to Camp Nou.
He has already tried to bring Diego Simeone into the conversation, hoping the coach might ease his way out. That attempt has not produced the outcome he wanted. Atlético’s stance has not softened, and the door remains firmly closed from their side.
Even so, Alvarez’s determination has not shifted. Barcelona are effectively betting that his continued pressure can alter the dynamics of the talks, or at least force Atlético to sit back down at the table.
Right now, the power of the player is the hinge on which the entire operation swings. If Rodri is the transfer Barcelona believe they can engineer with smart numbers and timing, Alvarez is the one that will test just how far a footballer’s will can bend a club’s resolve before the window slams shut.
