Barcelona on alert as Inzaghi opens door to Cancelo exit

A brief line from Simone Inzaghi has thrown Joao Cancelo’s future wide open and jolted Barcelona back into action.

On the eve of Al-Hilal’s league opener against Al-Faisaly, the Italian coach not only spoke – he acted. Cancelo was left out of the squad entirely, a blunt message that the Portuguese full-back does not figure in his early-season plans.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Sport, Inzaghi cut straight to the point: Cancelo is training as normal, but what happens next is no longer his call. The issue, he said, now lies with the Al-Hilal board.

For Barcelona, that sounded like a starting gun.

Hansi Flick has placed Cancelo at the top of his list for the full-back positions, valuing his ability to operate on both flanks and give the team tactical flexibility that was badly missed at times last season. The club interpreted Inzaghi’s words as a clear opening to accelerate talks over a second spell at Camp Nou.

The player’s stance is no secret either. Cancelo has repeatedly signalled his wish to return to Barcelona. On Friday he did it again, using Instagram Stories to post a fresh Barcelona-related image – his second public nod towards the club since the end of last season. Subtle, but not subtle enough to be misread.

The price rises – and the deal stalls

There is, however, a hard number blocking the way.

Negotiations between Barcelona and Al-Hilal had been edging towards an agreement around the €10 million mark. Then came a twist from Saudi Arabia: club sources indicated that Al-Hilal now want €15 million to let the 32-year-old go.

That change has chilled the talks. Barcelona are refusing to be drawn into what they see as an inflated fee in a tight financial context. Al-Hilal, for their part, are standing firm and will not move until they secure a replacement they trust to fill Cancelo’s role.

So the transfer sits in limbo, with all sides waiting but none yet willing to blink.

At the centre of it now is Deco. The sporting director must find a formula that brings Al-Hilal’s demands down or structures the deal in a way Barcelona can stomach, while still delivering the defender Flick has been pushing for.

Inzaghi has spoken. Cancelo has hinted. Flick is waiting. The next move belongs to Barcelona’s front office – and it could shape their entire back line for the season ahead.
