Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez is not dead. It might just be waiting for January.
The Atletico Madrid forward, once Barça’s first-choice answer to their No.9 problem, could find the door opening again in the winter window, with those close to the player increasingly convinced that the situation in Madrid cannot hold all season.
Cracks in Atletico’s hard line
El Chiringuito TV reports that Alvarez’s camp believes his position at Atletico could become “untenable” as the campaign wears on, a word that cuts right across the club’s public stance.
All summer, Atletico were blunt. Alvarez was not for sale. Internally, they treated the matter as closed long before the window shut, confident that the noise from Barcelona would fade once the market did.
It hasn’t.
The speculation still clings to the Argentine. Every strong performance, every quiet night, every tactical tweak from Atletico only feeds the sense that this story is on pause, not finished.
Atletico know it too. The club accepts that Alvarez’s future – and Barcelona’s interest – will remain a running theme this season, regardless of whether the forward ultimately stays or goes.
Barcelona’s plan that never really changed
For Barcelona, Alvarez was the chosen one. The preferred profile to lead the line. The ideal fit for their long-term No.9.
They tried to pull him out of the Metropolitano. They failed.
Barça pivoted to Gabriel Jesus, securing the Brazilian to bolster their attack. On the surface, that looked like the end of the Alvarez pursuit. In reality, it only parked it.
Inside the club, the view on Alvarez has not shifted. He is still seen as a top solution for the centre-forward role. The fact they could not land him in the summer does not erase that conviction.
Crucially, Barcelona are believed to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin available. That gives them the flexibility to at least explore another major operation when the window reopens.
If the right opportunity appears, they are financially positioned to move.
A possible power shift in January
The real twist lies in how the dynamics could flip.
In the summer, Barcelona were the ones trying to break down a locked door. Atletico had no intention of selling and behaved like a club fully in control of the situation.
If Alvarez’s camp is right, that balance might not last.
Should the atmosphere around the player sour or his role become problematic, Atletico could be forced to reassess their rigid stance. At that point, the conversation changes completely.
Instead of Barça pleading with Atletico to release a key asset, the scenario could see Atletico themselves sounding out Barcelona, gauging whether a deal is possible on their terms.
New intermediaries, with links to both clubs, are already expected to circle if the situation starts to move that way. Their involvement would only accelerate any shift from stalemate to negotiation.
For now, it is still just a scenario, not a structured transfer plan. But if tension builds around Alvarez in Madrid and Barcelona enter January with money to spend and a No.9 still to define, this saga is far more likely to reignite than disappear.
