Barcelona’s defensive rebuild will not include Gonçalo Inácio.
After sanctioning Ronald Araújo’s surprise loan move to Liverpool earlier in the summer, Barça opened up both a gap in the dressing room and a sizeable hole in the heart of their back line. The captain’s departure was framed as a reset for a player who had endured a bruising couple of seasons in Catalonia. For the club, it also meant one thing: a new central defender would almost certainly be needed.
Attention naturally turned to the market. While academy centre-back Álvaro Cortés is viewed as a genuine option to step up, Barcelona have been scanning for what they like to call “opportunities” — players who fit both the sporting idea and the fragile financial reality.
In recent days, one name kept circling: Gonçalo Inácio of Sporting CP.
Inácio links shut down
That speculation has now been firmly parked. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are not in talks with the 24-year-old and deny that any operation is underway. Romano went as far as to state there are “zero” ongoing links between Barça and Inácio.
The wording matters. Barcelona have been consistently linked with another centre-back before the window shuts, but Inácio should not be considered among the active targets. For now, his name drops out of the shortlist.
Flick’s verdict shapes the market
The stance on Inácio mirrors a recent internal debate over Cristian Romero. Barcelona ultimately did not move for the Argentine, and the reasoning points straight to the bench: Hansi Flick did not give the green light.
The same internal logic applies here. Flick and the sporting department are aligned in their view that Inácio is not the profile they want to pursue at this stage. That alignment makes any move highly unlikely.
Inácio has built a strong reputation in Portugal as a composed, reliable centre-back. But Barcelona’s hierarchy clearly view the jump from Sporting to Camp Nou as a different level entirely, one that demands absolute conviction from the coach. That conviction is not there.
Market still very much alive
Ruling out Inácio does not mean Barcelona are done with defensive business. Far from it.
With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club remain active, weighing up late moves and potential exits. One of those possible departures is Alejandro Balde. Should the left-back leave, Barça would suddenly be short not only in central defence but also on the flank.
That is shaping the profile Deco is now hunting. The sporting director is looking closely at players who can cover both roles: a left-footed centre-back comfortable stepping out to left-back when needed. Inácio, a left-footed defender himself, fits that description on paper, but the internal doubts have closed that door.
Barcelona still have key transfer calls to make in the coming days. The question is no longer whether they will move for Gonçalo Inácio. It is who they trust to anchor a new-look back line as the season’s pressure starts to bite.
