Barcelona's Urgent Contract Upgrades for Rising Stars
With the transfer window chaos finally parked, Barcelona have turned inward. The shopping is over; now it is about locking the doors.
Sporting director Deco and his staff have moved quickly to address what they see as an obvious weakness: outdated contracts for the young players who have just broken into Hansi Flick’s first team. These deals were signed when the trio were still academy or reserve prospects. They no longer fit the reality on the pitch.
At the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, the message is blunt. Barcelona do not want to lose a single rising star because of a cheap release clause. Talks with the camps of Abdelkarim, Espart and Farinas started around two weeks ago, and, according to SPORT, all sides sense an agreement is close. The aim is to have everything signed before the end of the month, shutting the door on European clubs already circling.
Espart, the early-season revelation
No youngster has shaken up the early weeks in Catalonia quite like Espart. Still a teenager, already a starter. Flick has trusted him from day one, naming him in the XI for each of Barcelona’s first three La Liga matches.
His versatility has been gold dust. Espart has slotted into multiple roles with a calm that belies his age, convincing the staff he belongs at this level. That faith has been formalised with the number 12 shirt on his back.
On paper, though, his contract tells a different story. His release clause is just €20 million, a figure set when he was still climbing through the academy. In today’s market, and given his impact, that number looks dangerously low.
Barcelona plan to change that fast. The club intend to follow the blueprint used with Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi: a long-term deal anchored by a huge, deterrent clause that screams one thing — untouchable.
Abdelkarim, from bargain clause to fortress wall
If Espart’s case feels urgent, Abdelkarim’s is critical. The Egyptian striker arrived from Al Ahly with a modest €15m release clause written into his contract. Back then, it seemed reasonable. Not anymore.
A standout summer at the youth World Cup, plus his first competitive minutes for the senior side, have transformed his status. Flick sees him as a central piece in his attacking plans, not a project to be loaned out. The board share that view and are ready to act accordingly.
The numbers on the table show just how dramatically the club’s stance has shifted. Barcelona’s new proposal, as reported, would multiply Abdelkarim’s clause by ten, rocketing it to €150m. That figure effectively kills any dream of a bargain raid.
Crucially for Barça, relations with the player’s entourage are excellent. No tension, no public posturing. The expectation is that the offer will be accepted without drama, giving Flick the security of building around a striker the club now clearly consider a long-term asset.
Farinas, the transfer that never was
Farinas’s story almost took a different turn this summer. He was on the brink of a move to Girona, close enough that his future seemed to lie away from Barcelona. Then Flick stepped in.
The German coach personally blocked the transfer, insisting the midfielder had a place in his first-team rotation. That intervention has reshaped Farinas’s career path. Instead of leaving, he has climbed a rung.
He now wears the number 4 shirt, once carried by Ronald Araujo, and is treated as a full senior player inside the dressing room. On the balance sheet, though, the same problem appears again: a €20m release clause that no longer matches his status or the club’s belief in him.
For Deco and his team, that is a risk they are unwilling to carry into the heart of the season. Like Espart and Abdelkarim, Farinas is expected to sign an upgraded deal with a far stronger protective shield.
Barcelona’s rebuild under Flick is not just about tactics or style. It is about ring-fencing the future. And in a market where one phone call can unsettle a teenager, the size of a release clause can say as much about a club’s ambition as anything that happens on the pitch.
